Re: aborts anyone?

Abhorts are mutant shrooms (no cap, multiple caps, odd shape) that cease growing at a small size. It is safe to eat them, and ironically they are very very potent. It is still safe to eat both shrooms if an abhort is attached to a regular one.

It is ok to use those dessicant packets, but I don't know if it is feasible seeing as that is such a small amount of dessicant! Those are just designed to keep the moisture out of the air in the box for whatever product, but for drying mushrooms there is a lot of water in the mushroom to be absorbed, so you are probably better off just buying some Damp-Rid, it is easy to get and cheap!

Yes they can be eaten at any stage of drying (water does not have an effect except to induce rotting if fresh shrooms are harvested and left to sit out).

Yes, abhorts are as you describe them. Any immature shrooms are edible, though they are much more potent (by weight) than when mature. Mushroom stalks are composed of simple tube-like formations that won't be much affected by removing adjacent or attached pins.
Dessicant packets are most likely silica gel, and are acceptable for the last stage of drying. You could air/fan dry with a lightbulb nearby until the shrooms appear dry (they won't be), then place with dessicant in the smallest container that can hold everything and is completely airtight. You'll know the shrooms are dry when they crumble easily.
If you have a large amount of material to dry, you need a fair amount of gel. It's available at hobby stores for the purpose of drying flowers. It is reuseable, and so is a one-time expense.
