Questions regarding lighting...

Here is something I recently purchased...

My friend suggested I should use something that does not use batteries. I did a search on different lights members use/suggested. Few posts informed me something I did not know; 12 hours of light is not needed.

No, read the thread. Mushrooms will pin in complete darkness, but to get a decent flush you need at least a camera flash to start them off.

So there you go, use anywhere from 1/2 millisecond to 24 hrs/day. Obviously it would be rather foolish to use 1/2 millisecond, so most growers use anywhere from 6-24hrs/day.

The whole point is that it doesn't really matter much.

I use two 12in. coolwhites above my big black bins and one 12in. over each of my coolmisted tubs. In nature cubies love light too.

So....with the light(s) that I have bought, could I just "press" them on for brief moments during the day? I am thinking about wiring these lights to be able to plug into an outlet. Has anyone dealt with an interesting task as this?

mmm stropharia..

Man,I would chuck that light.
Go out and buy some outdoor christmas lights.
or better yet go buy a small fluoresent light setup.
both can be purchased cheaply and it will save you the hassle of batteries, and your hair from standing on in from hard wiring that light you have.
Peace,

I couldn't initiate pinning on my trays until I got them into a room with a _bright_ overhead light for about 16 hours straight. After that I put them into a room with 12 hours of indirect light and they've been doing fine. Subsequent flushes might be effected, but since it's coir, I've already placed that bet...so to speak.

Still as with all things, quality matters, even in quality of light source. Florescent bulbs are awesome for mushy's because they're closer to the ultra-violet side of things.

Keep in mind that inoculating or whatever in front of a flow hood won't help your bad substrate, your bad inoculant, your bad sterile procedure, etc. etc. etc. It's not a +3 flowhood of magic, it's just a tool.

agar, do you have a fluorescent located at the top only? If so, how many levels do you have in that chamber of yours? I am assuming, by the looks of it, that you are using a martha stewart.

I appreciate all the responses; I wish I could rep, but I have not hit that 50 post mark yet.

Automated..........

One light on top works fine.
As white lining reflects well.

I am anal-rententive; I wanted to have a light directly above each level with trays. The FC is within a closet with white walls/doors. I suppose such a closet can give good light reflection. Do you think it would be ok to use a fluorescent placed directly above the FC? (placed either in or out)

Either way would work.
I would suggest outside, if it's easy.

It's no big deal to wire in a Christmas type bulb.
The exterior round golf ball size ones.
Above each shelf either.

You just don't want any lighting.
To create EXCESS heat.

The only sound advice you quoted above came from the the one with the most experience. Take hyphae's, Agar's or my advice that has been posted dozens of times about lighting.

Myth: If you can see the tray, it has enough light.
Reality: Bullshit. Bright, high frequency light is much better. Natural daylight fluorescent or metal halide will give the best pinsets.

Myth: You only need a few minutes of light per day.
Reality: Bullshit. 12/12 has been proved for years and years to be many times better.

You don't find the experienced growers making those silly statements. Fluorescent light gives the most bang for the buck with the lowest heat output. Incandescent gives the lowest bang for the buck with the highest heat output.

I have never done anything special with light and the regular fluorescent lights in the room the greenhouse was in was all I ever needed,I didn't use a specific time schedule either,if I was home the light was on,if not it was off, sometimes on for hrs sometimes off for hrs but always worked out great:dancingshroom:

I hear you, Blutjager; I am pretty much the same way with lighting.

I will just stick with using the lamp placed above the fruiting chamber. I am thinkin' of purchasing a fluorescent.

I appreciate the responses.

Here's what I use. It's worked great for me. They sell these plug-in fluorescent lights at Home Depot for around $20.
