Fluorescent light in monotub
    #7964762 - 02/01/08 12:42 PM (16 years, 14 hours ago)

I am contemplating putting a fluorescent light inside of a monotub for a super stealth grow. Does anyone see any problems with doing this? Like maybe the heat? Or would all be good?

Also does anyone know where I can find an 18" fluorescent bulb in the 6500 kelvin range? I found an 18" fixture at walmart that will fit but they don't have the proper heat range. I wanted to use that instead of the screw in style fluorescent bulbs because maybe it won't get as warm, the screw in style I am using now gets pretty warm

not only would heat be an issue, i believe it would also burn out and become a fire hazard. not many lights would be able to function properly and safely in an environment with such high humidity.

Correct. Lights with high voltage ballasts have no place in a high humidity environment.

wow really? i bought one of those 13'' fluoro tubes from mushymart and was using it in my FC for a while. nothing happened but it freaks me out that i could have burned down my house. i never even thought of that.

:banghead:

i was hoping to use the same thing in my monotub, but now i dont know how im gonna get sufficient light on it.

You can put your lights inside the monotube.Just put plastic wrap over the light fixture. It must have a plastic shield like the grow lights. Silicone the plastic wrap to the sides of the monotube. Its works great.

you could try using blue LEDs, they create virtually no heat.

lighting isnt even significant for mushrooms. Just place one outside of your monotub, above the lid. in my experience mushrooms could really care less about how much light they receive

Lighting is EXTREMELY important for a good pinset. Cubes will fruit in very low light conditions, but bright fluorescent light will help to trigger the pinsets the old timers show all the time that makes folks drool. Actually, you're probably right. The mushrooms don't care that much about light, but the mycelium sure as heck does.

Lights, especially fluroescent, should be OUTside the terrarium, but near enough to flood the fruiting chamber in bright, high frequency light. Don't put the ballast outside and the lamps inside. The tombstones have a fairly high voltage potiential across them, and wrapping a warm item in plastic in a wet environment is. . .dumb. There isn't much more useless than 'blue' mood lights, especially from led's.

dont use a blacklight... you will start a fire if you have it inside the monotub... sooo.. just use some bright ass compact fluorescent lights outside the chamber and you will get a good pinset... it just needs to be bright enough outside the chamber to cover the casing in light...

you really dont want to mess around with 120v and water... very bad mixture that will knock your dick in the dirt... just be careful... but you wont have to if the light is outside the high humidity area

black lights suck for mushies... they do not put out the right type of light to make a good pinset... just get a couple "energy saver" light bulbs.. the curley ones.. those are compact florescent... those will work just fine...

Yes I did, Its mainly there as a reference for other people. The old hands will say that 12-16 hours of light is best of OPTIMAL results. For people who dont want to deal with lighting, like myself, you can get by with just normal room lighting and that has worked fine for me.

Just because its in my signature doesnt mean I agree with their techniques 100%, just means I realize its a good reference material that is valuable to be shared with other people, without them digging it up themselves.

Everyone has their own way of doing stuff. You will find that some people agree with me that they get great results with minimal lighting, then you will find other people who have been doing this for years and have very nice setups with lights and timers and say that for OPTIMAL results use a specific light cycle.

Correct. A 60 watt light bulb on the ceiling is enough to trigger a few pins. Failure to use proper lighting doesn't mean the entire project is going to fail. It simply means it will be less than what could be achieved by a tad more work.

It's sort of like driving your car with one tire flat. You'll still get there, but not as fast, and people will point and giggle.

Lighting does make a HUGE difference in pinsets.

Pinsets triggered using a decent 16 Watt CFL:

in short we are agreeing but agruing about something stupid. Yes lighting is important and needed for optimal results. but you arent wasting your time if you dont have a light. you can still get fairly good results.
