Yo diggity.

I jsut found the wonderful site piratebay.org. I also downloaded Utorrent in order to download these files.

Just a few questions.


With Utorrent, is it normal for a 5 MB file to take 10 minutes to download on a cable modem?


Is there anyway to speed things up, am i doing something wrong?

My download speed is only reaching a max of about 7kb/s.

Whats the dilly?

i prefer using azureus, it seems to download faster than other clients i have used.

piratebay is a great site, i also like fulldls.com and isohunt.com

It all depends on the number of seeds (people you download from) and leechers (peers who are also downloading).

You want more seeds and less leechers. I believe that you also get faster speeds as you share more too. Just let it run, and it will likely get faster and faster.

I've used three clients that consistantly got the best speeds, utorrent being one of them (azureus and bitcomt were the others). It's a good client, so i'm not sure you should give up immediately with it. you could try taking a look at this utorrent setup tutorial. maybe it could help you out

also check out www.scrapetorrent.com

it searches all the main torrent sites (piratebay, isohunt, torrentspy, mininova, bttorrent, some more). it's convenient when trying to find something unusual.. like say underground/indie movies and music

Me is :sad: .  I finally found a video that I ahve been searching for forever, but then when it finished downloading and I go to play it, I get an error message saying that Windows Media Player is missing a codec and is unable to play the video.  So i try to search for the codec but microsoft is unable to find one.

So then i tried playing the video with all my other media players and none are able to play it because they are missing a certain file.


So what should I do?!

Is there any way to find the exact file i need.  Or is there any other media player i could download and try to play it with?


Is there any way to fix this problem?

Download the xp codec pack (assuming your running xp). Make sure you install windows media player classic with it (you can opt to not install certain parts). Open your video with windows media player classic. Should work.

Just get VLC media player, it's so much more convenient, especially if you're downloading a lot of videos.

another question...


if i restart or shut down my computer, will i lose all of the progress on my downloads on Utorrent, or when it reboots will they be where they were before i restarted?

Download speed has almost jack to do with what client you're using, and much more to do with the health of the torrent swarm and how many seeders there are. More popular torrents will download more quickly, because there will be more peers and seeders to upload data to you.

Also, you HAVE to make sure your NAT/firewall port is set up correctly to get the most out of torrents. If you're going to use torrents, DO NOT QUIT THEM UNTIL YOUR SHARE RATIO IS AT LEAST 1.0. Torrents only work if you give as much as you take.

Azureus is nice because of the amount of control you have over individual torrents and the user interface is nice, but it's very resource intensive for what it does (mainly because it's Java).

That said, it's what I use and prefer because my machine is decent. If I were using an older machine, I'd use a lighter weight BT client.

i dunno dude, i've had experience saying otherwise. I literally tried dloading several torrents from one client getting pitiful speeds (0-2kbs). Then changed clients and dloaded the exact same torrent, getting speeds of like 60-75kbs.

i totally agree with everything else you said though

and listen to jewunit. VLC is the shit. so easy. nice and small. just do it.

yeah, you can restart. When your comp boots back up, just open up the utorrent, highlight the files, and tell them to resume.

It IS possible that you were using a buggy or badly programmed client. But any of the decent clients should perform about the same.

Most likely, it had more to do with port setup than the clients themselves, though.

Another site you might want to bookmark would be www.torrentspy.com. Combined with The Pirate Bay, I get almost anything I want.

uTorrent will resume, so don't worry about that.

Also, expect files to take long. This method of downloading should be used with patience. I usually download a few things overnight so when I wake up I have them.

Also, a good thing to do when searching for torrents is to sort the results by number of seeds. This puts the fastest torrents at the top and the slowest (or dead) torrents at the bottom.

The best trackers are the private, invite-only ones. Once you're around BT for awhile, you'll find people who are willing to invite you.

Oink is great for music and Karagarga is THE tracker for non-mainstream movies.

Personally, I prefer contributing to public trackers. I feel as if my duties as a pirate are more fulfilled when anybody can access what I upload. I try to upload around 50% more than I download to keep the torrents healthier.
