Cake vs.Casing Debate

Someone I have talked to from the Mental Health office was wondering if he only had one terrarium to work with and cakes and casing cant be grown in the same container should he case them all or leave as cakes...he is using straight vermiculite casings for all of his cases. Due to conditions needed by each type of method they would not be subjected to the proper conditions that is needed to initiate growth. Or thats just what hes heard you know. Can they successfully grow with each other? If he wanted fruits fast would cakes or casing produce first?Either he can grow casings or cakes which one should he do?

You're right they cannot be grown together. Casings need a lower humidity to fruit. If he wants fruits fairly quickly cakes are the way to go. However, casings are going to produce a larger harvest. So the extra time pays off. If you want my honest opinion, I would not piss on cakes to put out a fire. I've said that once before on another post and i choose to say it again.

If i could I would case. If I wanted quick shrooms I would buy grown ones, that not being an option, cakes pin faster because you don't have to wait for the casing to colonize.

In reply to:

That depends on if you are casing cakes! Rye grain and birdseed will colonize faster than BRF cakes. So you could actually have a casing fruit just as fast....if not faster. And we all know casings make more fruits than cakes.
good luck!

my friend's casings have always pinned faster than his cakes. after crumbling the cakes and casing with coco, they're ready to go in the terarrium in two to three days. i've had cakes that took a couple weeks to pin.
cakes were a great stepping stone, and an interesting learning tool, but i certainly don't think i've sacrificed speed in any way.
take care! good luck whichever path you take! -bizarro
