UN to delegate doomsday asteroid policies
    #6578926 -

I'm all for having a plan of this sort. There's a lot of shit out there in space and if we don't blow ourselves up in my lifetime it's somewhat likely we'll get smashed pretty good with a chunk of space rock. So from the article on BBC News I read this:

"It is the brainchild of the Association of Space Explorers, a professional body for astronauts and cosmonauts. ...
The association has asked a group of scientists, lawyers, diplomats and insurance experts to draw up the recommendations."

If a giant asteroid is going to collide with Earth why the hell would you need insurance experts? If it doesn't hit or we deflect it, awesome. If not I don't believe having insurance experts around post-impact is going to make us any better off.

More money making tactics...fucking insurance? haha give me a break.

Seriously, if an asteroid was going to hit earth, destroying the planet, we(the common people) would never know about it.

They would try their best at least to keep a lid on it which is TOTAL fucking bullshit, but what can you do

Well if we do get hit (depending on how bad of course) and peoples property is damaged who do you think is going to be paying for it?

Yeah, I agree, however if its just a small asteroid that only effects a region of the planet insurance companies are going to play a big role in helping people to get back on their feet.

I'm pretty sure asteroids currently fall under "acts of god" on most all insurance policies.

in that scenario, true.  But the topic said "doomsday asteroid", so I assumed.

Still, you have to admit it's a money making tactic.  God forbid it just happens and whatever damage is done is fixed and taken care of, free and clear.  I live in never never land though

Why wouldn't we bring insurance companies into it? Like mattz said, if repairable damage is done to the planet, people will want their shit back. Meteor insurance is gonna be a hard one to sell until it's actually about to happen, though. :P

Actually I just called Progressive and they said they'd cover any damage to my car if an asteroid hit it. I didn't ask about damage from a large asteroid impact that didn't directly hit my car, though.

For every huge asteroid there is a greater likeliness of a slightly smaller asteroid hitting us.

Gravel-sized asteroids hit the earth's surface all the time, with the force of say a shotgun blast. This happens multiple times daily. Earth has formed and become so big because of all the stuff that keeps falling down from space all the time.

Then there are the slighly bigger ones. If you ask around long enough eventually you will speak someone who has witnessed a sudden clap of thunder, heard when strangely there were no clouds at all. These have the force of say 0.1-100kg TNT, comparable to weapons of war

On the other extreme you have extinction level impacts which occur give or take every 100 million years. Those meteors have the power in the order of a million billion kilos of TNT

In between are rocks that are the really bad news, because they can wipe out areas of many square miles, yet occur fairly frequently too.

The last one we know of was the one that exploded over a remote area of Russia in 1908, with the force of 10-20 billion kilos of TNT, a thousand times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb.

------------------------------------------
The Tunguska event was an explosion that occurred near the Podkamennaya (Under Rock) Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai of Russia, at 7:17 AM on June 30, 1908. The event is sometimes referred to as the Great Siberian Explosion.

The explosion was probably caused by the airburst of an asteroid or comet 5 to 10 kilometers (3–6 mi) above the Earth's surface. The energy of the blast was later estimated to be between 10 and 20 megatons of TNT, which would be equivalent to Castle Bravo, the most powerful nuclear bomb ever detonated by the US. It felled an estimated 80 million trees over 2,150 square kilometers (830 sq mi). An overhead satellite view centered at 60°55′N 101°57′E (near ground zero for this event) shows an area of reduced forest density, with a fully visible irregular clearing of somewhat less than one square kilometer in area.

In recent history, the Tunguska event stands out as one of the rare large-scale demonstrations that a full doomsday event is a real possibility for the human race.
------------------------------------------

Imagine 830 square miles of forest completely flattened by a concussive blast!
These kind of rocks would require high power insurance solutions, imagine one falling onto say New York State or into the ocean, causing a massive Tsunami on several continents.

We need a worldwide organisation, say based off the UN, devoted to mapping the skies and getting rid of potential threats from outer space.

If a really big asteroid was headed this way, there is no way it could be covered up. High tech amateur astronomers from all nations would see it coming and spread the news on the Internet. Because of the sheer numbers and sophistication of enthusiasts, it is very well possible that the first sighting of such a rock will be made by a hobby astronomer.

I find such statements from scientists silly in my opinion.

How do we know that it's a standard 100 million years between such asteroids? For all we know, one could be arriving in 5 with another one of same size 20 years behind it.

I think we really don't know when an asteroid of such magnitude will hit, besides seeing it with hubble and giving us time to scramble for solutions.

any one driving through AZ on i-40 i think, has a chance to see the 'asteroid crater' a site of a large asteroid impact thousands of years ago.

Yeah, the meteor crater in AZ is pretty cool.  And they got a decent visitors center/museum there as well.  That was a fairly small event (not resulting in mass extenction) which occured about 50,000 years ago.  However, an event of that size located anywhere near a modern population center would be devastating for sure!

Now the motherfucker that hit near the Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago and wiped out the last of the dinosaurs....that was impressive!!

Well, its not like 100 million years is exactly the time it takes between impacts. Just a round-about number.

Also, many astronomers who study large asteroids in our solar system say that the planet-devastating impact sized asteroids are much more rare since the one that wiped our the dinosaurs, because as bodies orbit the sun, they hit each other and break into smaller asteroids.

They don't really join together to make bigger asteroids. So while they are floating out there, there are far less than, say, 100 million years ago.

Your experience will tell you that. But success in getting after much labor what you really don't care for is the bitterest and most ridiculous failure." -George Santayana
