oysters big set up link
    #6553368 -

I remember some months ago of seeing pictures of an oysters big set up growroom where the grower used two levels hanging black bags...

Could somebody post the link?

Thanks in advance!

I believe you're asking about brainbreath over at the nook - here's one of his threads, but you can search the edible fungi forum over there for his threads and you'll find more.

http://www.thenook.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=31585

I think you have to be logged in there for the pics to show up...
Also I have a few, but the bags are clear, and I they're from before I switched the whole growroom over to the vertical hanging bags. They used to be some vertical and some hanging, then I went to all hanging...

Sorry they're old pics I've posted before, but I'm away from ECHO for the time being, and miss the farm dearly...:(

I'm glad you asked this, cause now I can catch up with old BB over there...
Light and Love,
JD

I would like to see more pictures of the mushroom houses, and how they are built. I'm trying to figure out the best/cheapest way to build mushroom houses..

My best guess was building pole barns, with concrete floors, but I want to know the specifics on your insulation methods, cooling methods and heating methods.

i believe the ONLY problem of the edible mushrooms growers is that exist too much forum (included mine) to search infos. Should be an ONLY dedicated great giant forum, with pics. The "Mecca" of the edible growers.

What do you think about it?

We can try to move people here and try to ask to the admin to modify the structure of this section. Or we can buy new space, be everyone of us the owner of that giant, but firstly we have to see the prices. We're a lot and shpuldn't be a problem i suppose for every of us spends some money for a right cause.

I know isn't easy but if others admins love really edibles they will understand. I can close FSP Forum and add a direct link to here, we can contact mushworld, the nook, mycotopia and others foreign portals.

This is not a post against Shroomery or others great Forums but i believe we feel the need to have an ORGANIC and DINAMIC place for edibles and medicinal mushrooms. Isn't easy to follow different forum if you work in something that aren't mushrooms.

So i wait your answer, we can also open a new thread or move the thread on FreeSporePrints.org forum if this post create problems here.

Okay a few things for everyone -
FGL -the banana tree oyster log, which I have posted at the ECHO site in my signature, was one of those experiments that was just like, "Let's try it!" Which I LOVE to do. One of our missions at ECHO is to find things that work, and replicate them a few time until we have something transferable (as in techniques/knowledge) to others, especially in the developing nations. In my opinion, it was interesting, and fun to do, but not really optimal (as Agar would say:D). Basically I took an icepick and poked holes all over the fresh stem (we do a lot of work with bananas- 15 to 20 varieties growing at any one time- so there's always a lot of material to work with, cut stems, dead leaves, etc.).

Once I had the holes in it, I buried it in the ground about 4 - 6 inches deep. Then I took a jar of grain spawn (rye berries), and hand filled the holes. Then I melted wax over the grain-filled hole. I waited a while (and to be honest I cannot remember how long - this was a few years back), I think about 10 days, because that is how long my pink oyster strain took to fruit most of the time (like clockwork ) - love that strain. Then one day I walked out of the growing house (the log is buried a few feet from the entrance), and there were all the little mushrooms.

In my opinion here's what happened - the grain supported the fruiting, and the log acted as a container, but also keep moisture available to the mycelia. So the banana stem itself wasn't "eaten" or metabolized by the mycelia, but was just a nice temp/moisture modulator.

However I noticed big yield increases (like 100% increase) by using 10% by volume of chopped dried banana leaves (you only want the dead brown ones, not the living green ones), to wheat straw substrates. I used to get about 1250 grams of oysters to a 3 foot log, with banana leaves added I got 2500+ grams per log, so it was definitely worth the effort to gather and chop some banana leaves while I was chopping bales of straw.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay now to Cryogenicz -
I have pics of mushrooms houses all over the world, they're just scattered between three or four different computers, but I can try to find some. There are all kinds of ways to build effective mushroom houses, and they are built from everything you can imagine. The ECHO growing house is a thatched hut (because we want to be somewhat realistic as to what those in developing nations will be able to do with our technologies). It has an air in and an air out, hanging racks all made from 2 x 4's, and some water resistant walls made out of I have no idea what. I think what your growing house should be made of is determined by a number of factors -
1. How much control of environment do you need?
In Florida, I can grow all year with no temp control, I just switch species to go with the months. In the dead of February, I do use a little space heater
2. What materials can you obtain?
3. What is your budget?
4. What types of pest control will you use?
Netting or screening is pretty effective. Neem oils are good, you'll need to work all kinds of combinations, as bugs like mushrooms. I always liked how Paul Stamets has the frog in his fruiting rooms, and we did have frogs as well.
5. how are you going to control FAE?

in fact there are too many variables to go over. But I've seen success in the smallest, poorest areas of Africa, and failures in expensive, well designed houses (don't forget, a business is just that, without proper business blueprints, you've got the deck stacked against you.)
As far as pole barn with concrete floors, it is a good idea to build a drainage system into the concrete floor, we have that at ECHO, and it is a great idea.

Really, and I'll be honest, my biggest obstacle was bugs. They never got too out of control, but were the biggest mission for me. I think it was the thatching in the hut, but I don't know. I would've beat them if I had been able to stay longer, but that's life, always throwing you curve balls! If and when I go back, I'll have a better plan.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
RR -Thank you! You're too kind!

Hope all is well with you in Italy! What you're talking about above has both merits and challenges. The scope of such a task is daunting for me just to think about - routing all interested parties to a singular location takes advertising dollars away from the home sites, puts a rather large administrative burden on the new Mega-Site, and also would require a dedicated team of techhies to run it behind the scenes. Not to mention when something like that is successful, others copy the idea:thumbdown:

On the other hand, it would be wonderful to have the whole of mushroom knowledge consolidated in one place, and easily search-able! I can only dream about the possibilities. It is also a wonderful challenge to take on, and of course, it like anything else in life, is achievable with the right team working on it. We all create our own realities.

Anyway sorry about the long post. I just love you all here, and so love to "talk out loud" here." I read everything here, and in all the other places (mycotopia, the nook, mushworld, Yahoo groups like NAMA cultivation group, pubmed, and I try to go to the conferences when at all possible, like the AMI world congresses, and I'd like to get to one of the World Mushroom Society's in Asia too)
Light and Love to you all!

Thanks for that banana info Jeremy. My father has a lot with those damn trees over taking it. (You have to continuously cut the trees back, or they'll over take the whole works.) I may get him to start saving me some of the scraps to try as supplements.

Yeah, I think the interns were happy that I took an interest, and was out there a lot of days trimming the dead/dying leaves right off the trees! But really they left the big leaves on the ground and created huge raised beds with them, said it was beneficial in all kinds of ways...

I did find a few pics tonight in my laptop. Here are some pictures from Tanzania. It is a very poor country that got hit with the highest inflation in the world right now, from what this farmer tells me. His name is Nyasha Muposo, and you may be able to search his name in Mushworld for some really interesting and well written articles on the business of mushrooms in that economic climate. Also why he thinks it's a good crop for these times in Tanzania.

If I remember correctly this is the side of the incubation room

This - I believe - is a side view of the fruiting room

And this is called wall culture. They make little logs and then stack them in walls that run through the growing room in rows, about 3 feet or so high. I believe they use some nutrient rich paste or mortar-like mud - or some such thing - in between the bags, like a bricklayer uses mortar. It gives extra nutrients for the mycelia, and water is applied directly to the "walls" like a watering can, or hose...It's been a while since he sent these to me, but if you have specific questions, I can always try to act as a go between, and get some of his knowledge here too.

I'll also point him here, but I know internet time is expensive there in Tanzania, and I know how addicted he'd become to this place!

Light and Love,
JD

Jeremy

Thank you for the information!

Well, I live in Oregon and I was thinking of doing the most inexpensive as possible at first, with option to upgrade as time progresses and money starts flowing to do those upgrades.

I have a lot of restaurants that are interested in Oyster mushrooms, and so I have decided on them because of their demand and ease.

I was thinking of building the modified insulated greenhouse type of mushroom house, but I am trying to figure out the best ways to heat/cool it in the future (right now I will use different species to use most of the year)

I have electric, water and drain services available and would be able to pipe them over to the mushroom houses.

I just want to keep an open mind and not be so narrow thinking just because i think its a good way, or it "looks cool"

hey graham, we are setting up a really cool heating system right now.

we are in northern vermont so heating is a large concern

we are using a wood fired steam generator to steam straw for oysters, and piping water into the cement floor for radiant heat.

my friend who owns the farm is basically an engineer so he has set it all up, but once it gets explained it seems pretty simple.

the hot water gets cooled a bit so it doesnt melt the pipes, then gets piped into the floor, its all really simple. i can get some pics next week if you want.

there are two grow rooms connected to two thermostats, connected to solenoid valves, controlling the amount of water that gets piped in.

he totally designed and built it himself and im sure once someone sees what it takes they would be able to do it as well.

i think the hardest part was building the masonry wood fired steam generator, but its basically just a bunch of bricks and an old propane tank for the water storage. the heat goes around the enclosed propane tank to heat it up and the water just gets piped out.

i dont think im really doing a good job explaining this.. maybe i can get him to get on here and do a write up, or at least ill be able to get pictures and maybe that will help me explain a bit more. i really think this is going to work great and be very efficient, as the entire floor is getting heated up, and holding all that heat.

Sounds good to me, with the exception of melting pipe? What kind of pipe is run from the generator to the slab?

cold water is introduced so the pipe doesnt melt..

its this red pipe thats really easy to work with.. really easy to cut and splice in and attach etc, w/o the need to solder.

works really good and is rated to 180degree water.. i think he is only gunna pump 130degree in though.

edit:
sorry i dont have the name of it, but i can get more details next week when i go in, and take some pics. ill try to get a list of things to ask and report back

Ok. Sounds like PEX then. It's good pipe, but can only withstand temps up to the 200 degree range.

It's how they heat airplane hangars in very cold climates. It's very effecient, and when you open the doors, as soon as you close them, it's almost immediately warm again. That isn't the case with radiant or forced air heat, where it all goes outside, then you have to wait for the place to warm back up. You could probably use copper right out of the tank if you 'need' it any hotter, which I doubt. The best part is being able to walk around barefoot in the winter.

I used to clean two aircraft in a hanger. Sometimes you had to take your shoes off to get up on the planes to you could feel where you're stepping. Stepping on the wrong place of an aircraft isn't good. lol

Sorry folks, no pics this week. I forgot my camera.

I did get a little run threw of the system for you though.

Water gets heated in a large tank to 150-160F. It gets piped from there over to a expansion tank. From there it gets split for the two grow rooms. Each grow room has its own mini-pump operating on a thermostat. From the pump it gets split again into a few more pipes, which run threw the floor. After the floor is goes back into the holding tank that is getting heated. **note** There are no solenoid's like I said in a previous post. The only control is the mini-pumps on the thermostat.

Its really an elegant and simple setup, but it seems like it will work well. We are just testing it now, thawing out this huge building that has been sitting in negative degree weather for months. Its an undertaking, and a testament to how well this system will work. We are hoping once it is all warmed up it will hold its heat really well, as it is a very large mass.

Here are a few older pics..

This is the masonry heater-in-progress. Its built from a steel drum and surrounded by cement. It now has a propane tank on top of it for water storage, completely surrounded by masonry. Pics of that later..

This is one of the two growrooms. They are built of rebar, and sprayed w/ cement using a "gunite" machine. This is a pic of work-in-progress. The frame is mostly done but there is now piping all over and doors etc.. Its actually still a work-in-progress.

More pics and info later. Enjoy
