Bomb in the microwave?
    #6512979 -

Every time I try to sterilize some distilled water in the microwave, it explodes. I've even shut the microwave off, removed the jar of water, and it exploded in my face (that shit hurt :hotidea:).

I'm guessing it's caused by the lack of impurities in the water, not allowing the water to boil. Any ideas on how to remedy this problem? Thanks.

Do yourself a favor dude never put distilled water into the microwave. You have already experimented what can happen. Distilled water doesn't boil you can really hurt yourself. I believe what ever tek you may be going by doesnt\'t say microwave distilled water.

the lack of impurities does not allow it to boil and it super heats way up above the boiling point. so when there is any sort of disturbance of the surface tension it boils and vaporizes very violently.

It happens more often than you think. The problem is energy (heat) build up when microwaves hit the water. You can diffuse this energy by placing a stick in the water or any microwave safe material in the water. Give it a shot and let us know how it works.

I think one of the shroom-gods here once said that you when that happens you were superheating the water way beyond boiling temperature. Opening the door to the microwave causes a pressure difference that immediately vaporizes the water. (Sorta like a pressure cooker, but at atmospheric pressure.)

Maybe I'm just baked, and forgot what they said. We will soon find out. LOL

At any rate, may I suggest using steam sterilization in a mason jar in a pot or in your pressure cooker? You can do pint or 1/2 pint jars of distilled, sterilized water with relative ease. AFOAF uses a tyvek filter over the lid just like in a grain tek so that his jars don't explode.

Thanks guys. I pretty much knew why this happened, I just didn't know how to fix it. That's just what I was looking for Wronguy. I'll give it a try.

what wronguy said is 100% correct. It actualy doesn't have to be distilled water for this to happen.
