I was thinking the other day, what if instead of boiling the jars you microwaved them? You couldn't use tin foil obviously, but wouldn't the microwaves kill anything harmfull in there? The only bad thing I can think of happening is it drying out, but if you covered it right it shouldn't and even if it did get drier (but still have water in it) that way you could dunk it after the spores sprout. Any thoughts?

Search posts from "Blackout" or PM him. He's the microwave master and he should have some good info for you.

Yes microwaving does work, but on dry heat. This can seriously dry out your jars, unless you put them in say a cassarole dish with an inch of water ......
I've never actually used the microwave (just reposting off what I've gathered from the FAQ's and other such posts). I advise you to take Foo's advice and seach it out, that way you can get a better understanding, but yes it can work.

Yes thats the main problem. Also it wont reach high enough temps to kill endospores so fractional sterilization is needed for grains. Check out my comments at the bottom of this page for doing grains. http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/23372
I am currently experimenting with the 9er tek in the microwave. i.e. whole grain brown rice in the microwave. The problem is if you add too much water your grains will explode and turn to mush, RGS doesnt explode but has endospores. Rice has no endospores so you add excess water and microwave it until it is the correct moisture/weight. I have some prepared ready for inoculation, it is about 2 weeks old now with no signs of contams, only problem is that it has some hard dried out spots due to be not shaking much while microwaving.
Another problem with microwaves is hot/cold spots. I have had grains burn badly, this is due to them not having enough water, the more water the better, but then grains turn to mush so it is catch 22. But with rice there is no exploding so you can add lots of water
Click on my microwave growlog link for a successful grain grow.
