Activism
    #6507911 -

This is not at addressed at people on any particular stage (as if such a thing could be qualified) of their spiritual paths.

What are some causes that you are active in promoting? Are you involved in state, local, or national politics? Are you involved in any kind of fundraising or dissemination of information with the intent to affect positive change in the external world? Are you involved in the awesome practice of being an actively compassionate human being at all times and by whatever means you can be?

What role does outward activism play in your inner ekklesia? To what end do you seek to improve the conditions of others?

--------------------
“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I've been involved with various groups, but I'm always wary of large organizations with funding that use Robert's rules of order to conduct meetings.

for now i see activism broken down into two groups.

One group that can actually have an effect, whether it's protecting natural habitat, feeding hungry people or opening people' eyes to greater truths.

and the other group which generally has no real affect in terms of their stated goals, and deals mainly in psycho-social realm of ideologies rather than getting their fingers dirty. (this basically includes most large U.S. anti-war activist groups)

Even the group that manages to accomplish things will spend most of it's time applying band-aids to wounds rather than stopping the assailant.

Why are we ignoring the assailant and focusing on the wounds?
If we can't even look the real problems in the face how can we expect to deal with them at all? But that's what so many are doing, bumbling along spouting peace and justice while they commit atrocious acts of psychic and emotional violence against their own self and those close to them.

I wish some activists would look at their selves for a change.
Relentless extroverts often do more harm than good to any cause. Unfortunately these people often rise to leadership positions.

My desire to improve the condition of others is empty and meaningless if i am not first willing to admit that my own condition needs improving.

Activism, I try to take a behind the scenes role if at all.  I'll fund things that I believe in, but as far as taking a stand and promoting the ideas and such, I'm silent.  I just see it as counterproductive to my life.  Activism seems to consume most involved taking their time and energy that would benefit them more if used for themselves.

Example:
Legalize pot?  Sure I agree it should be legal along with most other drugs, but I'm not gonna hold signs or attend a protest.  I'd be risking too much.  My involvement is with a simple donation and a vote when necessary.

That's my stance on activism.  Fund the fanatics so you don't have to be one.  They can spend all their time fighting for every inch and I hope they get a mile, but I know they probably won't.  It'll stress and frustrate them to no end for little pay off.  I'm not into that sort of thing, but I'm glad there's people who are.

:blah:
