Albert Hoffmann's activism
    #4092389 - 04/24/05 07:27 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

First off, two on-line copies of two of his books, LSD: My Problem Child and Steal This Book. Kind of ironic that "Steal This Book" would eventually end up freely available.

Anyway, I'm doing a research paper on Dr. Hoffmann, who is the inventor/discoverer of LSD and activist. I was curious if anyone knew if there was any connection between his activism & his LSD use (I did a search, and I saw a thread where mjshroomer said that he only tripped 12 times). "Steal This Book" is an extremely raw book on how to survive for free off the man. More notably, it's a quasi-instruction book on how to further the revolution. Many of the advice he gives would probably get a person in a LOT of trouble in modern times!

At any rate, I'm just wondering what kind of impressions other people here have of Dr. Hoffmann. I've found reading about him to be extremely fascinating.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Steal This Book was written by Abbie Hoffman...no relation to Uncle Albert there. Albert Hoffmann was not any sort of activist...he was a low key organic chemist. Abbie Hofmann was the activist. In the end he was little more than a small fry loudmouth who accomplished little in life except ending his own.

Those books are by two different authors. "LSD: My Problem Child" is by Albert Hoffman. "Steal This Book" is by Abbie Hoffman.

Um..."Steal This Book" isn't by Albert Hoffmann...it's by Abbie Hoffmann.

You've gotten mixed up here.
Steal this book is by ABBIE Hoffman. He was an activist in the 60s/70s
The scientist who invented LSD is ALBERT Hofmann. He also became somewhat of an activist, but it's a different guy.
Notice the different spelling of the last name.

Holy shit... I guess I didn't pay enough attention to detail. I confused the two, which is fairly embarrassing. I mentioned to my English professor I was going to do a report on Albert Hoffmann, and he recommended ?Steal This Book?. I thought the names referred to the same person.

Errr... pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

for the sake of repeating the repeated....

a friend of mine met abbie in a basement in queens.
he was hiding from the party upstairs and hung out with my friend (who was about 8 years old) and smoked pot.

I will say that I am VERY glad that I only got started on Albert Hoffmann and haven't written anything about Albie Hoffman. Crips, what a horrible paper that would have been.

The prompt response to this error on this forum gives me hope. Good job for admitting the error without an ego blowup...Good Job!!!

My first thought when I read what I had done, was "how can I turn this into a way of demonstrating the illusion of the ego?" Needless to say, if I had gone that route, it would have just proved the extent to which we try to keep our ego high, but not in the way I would have wanted.
