question about Micron magic filter disk jars
    #648211 - 05/27/02 03:26 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

I recently purchased micron magic filter disc for my jars and was wonder what the best way to innoculate them would be. Like through the filter or what?

I decided to experiment with the filters and did this

removed metal lid insert from ring
put filter in ring
filled jars w/ substrate
sealed, put tinfoil over lid and jar

pressure cooked

Im gonna innoculate and put tinfoil back over... I originally was using the lid, ring and filter but found it to be pointless, unless Im missing something, but from what the micron magic site says thats the way your supposed to use them.

I thought about it and am a little concerned about the lids and how well they will protect my jars, that is the only reason I would use the lid, the filter and the ring..

we will see Im doing trials on 4 jars, hopefully all goes well.

i pc with two filter disks already in place with a lid band only. when you innoculate your jars, simply raise one, innoculate through the other and lay the second back down.

Damn good advice X... I was gonna say just use the rings on top of filters... Unscrew ring holding down filter, innoc on the outter most edges, replace ring (Covering innoc holes from contams)....

But if you have the cash or means for 2 filters, that's the way I'd go...

I have to disagree chow_fon, they help speed up colonization times,
Ive used them for grain spawn and for half pints,

also IMOA lifting the disk to add spores defeats hte purpose of the whole thing, as you are allowing a breech in the jar
no, filter disks arent a totall stop gate for contams, but they really help out , I stil use a hepa box with them , and the only contams I have had were from a bad syringe.

Do it like this,, for pf tek or any other jar tek

fill jar with substrate then a ramsey seal( i use this layer of verm, just in case I fucked up and make the substrate too wet, I can turn it over and the verm takes up alot of moisture,, im a worry wart)
then a filter disk followed by a metal lid(i put 4 good size holes in the center for ventiallation, but you can just put a half incher there if you want) then the ring, an some tinfoil on top of that(pitch the tionfoil after PC'ing, its not need after that)when you innocc, just remove the ring and lid (not the disk) and punch through the disk into the substrate ,near the edges so that the lid and ring will cover the holes(no tape) replace the lid and ring and there you go, i have reused the disk like this several times,
and also trim the disk down the the bottom of the lid, put a blade in the ridge and cut it off, so you will not wick up water when you PC

and you will see a better clean cake rate, and you should see some speed added to it, at least for me, after the cake is fully colonized on the outside, it seems to colonize it quicker on the inside where you cannot see it, with a filter disk.,

I suggest that were ever you incubate you keep a high level of humidity as not to dry out the cake because of all the ventilation,,I use a bucket of perlite in my incubator.

but then again, im a pathological liar and im talking outta my ass,,,,,

Yeah I think Chow Fan is full of shit to say that the filter disks don't work. I have to say that my colonization times have been up to 30% faster with the disks in place. Maybe you should learn how to use them or something.
When used correctly, the filter disks are like a breakthrough, yet so simple. I'm about to embark on a birdseed journey thanks to Suntzu's great tek, and the filter disks will be more importtant than ever.

ok im using the filter disks and i talked to the guy at mickron magik and he said that if u dont use the middle lid that the jars may dry out i dunno but after i pced my jars with the diskc and jus tinfoil the rings are on really tight and i cant get them off lol
im not gunna put the middle lid on for the fact i cant but he said they may dry out
tip. in ject the jars through the filter disks close to the edge drill a hold in the middle of the lid this way the injection hole are sealed but it can still get air and not too much to dry out

The best way to use the filter discs is to put the aluminum foil over the top layer of casing and put the anti-contam layer on top of the aluminum foil. Then put a filter disc over and the screw on ring. After you innoculate toss on another filter disc and call it good.

Micron Magiks site has the tek for how to use the Filter discs.
Read it... use it! ... Enjoy!
