Micron Magic and PF

I read the tek for the quart jar method with Micron Magic filter discs. I want to try this with the pf tek omiting the dry vermiculite layer and adding to filter discs like the web site said to do for quart jars. Does any one have experience with filter discs and PF style? I think it might work. I might sterilize the jars and wait a week before innoculation to wait for contam's. Any one think this would work well? Thanks.

An aquantince did up 13 jars last Sunday evening. 10 used Micron Magick filter discs and 3 were done normally with 4 holes in the metal lid. All jars are germinating... however the difference in growth rate between the metal lids and filter discs is quite dramatic. The filter disc jars are between 50-70% colonization. The 3 metal lidded jars(tape OFF the holes) are maybe at 20-30%. He has had no problems with filter discs besides having to trash a few jars that got wet through the filter discs during steam/boiling sterilization. My aquantince does not believe he shall ever do jars the normal way with metal lid again.

My aquantince steam/boil sterilized for 1 to 1 1/2 hours and has seen no contamination as yet using these filter discs. He has noted the much faster colonization and that's it. I agree that you perhaps should have went the full hour or more sterilizing and that's probably where your contamination came from NOT from the filter discs. If you used jars where water had boiled onto the tops and soaked through the disc that is perhaps another reason.

Hey Nushroom, I used your disks and all I get is contamination. I mixed my jars right after I took a big crap(didn't wash my hands) and I put the filter disk on the lid. My oven was in the shop so I sat on the jars for 2 hours to kill the contams. I innoculated and 2 days later my jars were as green as a forest!! What the hell. This is my first time, but I have never had this problem before. I think its your disks. J/K HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! ahem.
