Has anyone tried those Micron Magic disks? I just ordered some and I just want to get a good idea on how good they actually work.

They filter down to 0.3 microns and provide excellent air exchange for faster colonization and induced risk of contamination. The problem is that you are not going to want to poke a hole through the disk when you innoculate your disks so a open jar with the low dollar sterile (oven tek.) is used to achieve this.

when using pf tek jars, you can poke holes thru the disks, as the verm layer still acts as a barrier to airborne contams. (think of using it as the metal lid, but instead a filter disk providing more air exchange).
when using quart jars (or a method which does not have the extra verm barrier) you can use 2 disks- poke thru one, and lay another on top of it.
no need to *open* the disk up and squirt in. you can to save a disk when using quarts, but since theyre relatively inexpensive (comparing to fp's prices) it becomes a cost benefit analysis.
(the info above is derived from nushroom's site, Micron Magick and his explanation of the use of the disks, not personal experience yet. i dont personally know how well the above work, but since its something a vendor who sells these disks recommend, im lending it creduilty.)

Well they sound good in theory but I've yet to talk to someone who has actually tried them, but I guess I'll know soon enough. Also, does anyone know anything about that hydropod? Kinda pricy, but it looks like it would be worth it.

Hydropod is a cultivation system built to hydrate cakes -- so it really becomes useless when you start caseing. Why not buy three for the price of two?

Right, I brought that up when I was talking to one of the salesmen and he said that casing is useless. That's not true is it?

i hope i dont mistate the purpose of the pod... but casing in the hydrapod is useless b/c it fulfils the *purposes* of the casing layer. which are:
1. to protect the colonized substrate from drying out
2. to provide a humid microclimate for primordia formationand development
3. to provide a water reservoir for the maturing musrooms
4. to support the growth of fruitification enhancing microorganisms
(from The Mushroom Cultivator- Stamets. p 128-129).
now, the hydrapod fulfills #'s 1-3. making the application of a casing layer unnecessary... #4... ew... microorganisms. :) not applicable.
you dont have to stick to the cakes as you know them (as pf cakes; brf/verm cakes birthed and placed in a terrarium). nushroom (the beta tester for te hyrdapod) is using a several-quart birdseed "cake" (thats pretty large- looks like a bundt cake :) and nothing like a cake as most people think of them). you can search for his hydrapod beta-tester threads for pics of what im talking about.

lucid- filter disks have been around for a long time, but until nushroom/micron magick came around, they were very expensive and usually out of reach for most small cultivators. check out www.fungi.com (stamet's site)- 100 disks run about 45-55$. whooooooooa! :) so they just havent had a lot of press prior to nu- but they were bring used by home cultivators (of gourmets/medicinals) for awhile with success. also theyve been used in another form- as little disks to fit into drilled holes in plastic autoclavable lids. (also available at fp, and you can cut them out of nu's disks).
ps- micron magick's disks *arent* the same as fp's. mycosupply's are. but they are rated to the same filtration as the ones offered by fp- so just as good in theory ::grin::

I asked micron about needle holes, just keep the jars covered, loosely, with foil.....Had no problem with contams especially if you use a dry layer of Verm.

right now (for discussio) i have 4 quart jars and 4 1/2 quart jars going all using the MMGG tek. the quart ones are having their share of problems but the 1/2 quart ones i just innoc'ed on... monday(?) i believe. i just got some .3 micron filter disks @ 99.97% efficiency from micron magick; 100 for $15 with no shipping charge. pretty damn good if you ask me, as far as the holes in them i started the cakes prior to this but upon recieving the filters yesterday night i replaced the 4 hole lids/tinfoil with the disks cut to size. so theyre on there now with no holes. after i placed them back in the warm terrarium, i poured about 1/2 capful of peroxide on teh top of the disks and spread it on the whole filter just to keep molds from landing on there and growing through the filter. its highly improbable but it cant hurt... ill follow up when progress is apparent.

I don't have a pressure cooker so I boil my jars, will the disks hold up to that when I boil them or would it be better to replace the metal disks w/ the micron ones after sterilization?

dude just put a little piece of tape over your innoculation hole.. have you not read the hundreds of threads on the filter discs already? oh, i would spend the $25 on a pressure cooker...boiling sucks dick... put foil over top with rubberband...

No, I'm sorry, I have a job and a life outside my computer. Yes I've tried to read up all I could on every aspect of mushroom cultivation with a majority of my time dedicated to with the actual aspects of growing rather than filter disks. And where can I get a pressure cooker for $25.00, all the ones I've seen have been priced over $200.00.

Now that you've read how great the Micron Magick Filters are.. you can get
100 Micron Magick Filter Discs and a 10cc T3 spore syringe package that
sells for $25.00.This ALSO gives you a 1:20 chance of winning a HydraPod for growing.
Jump to Vendors forum.. "Want to win a HydraPod?" There are 8 chances left at this time.
You save yourself a couple of bucks on the filters and syringe too! Go look.

hey lucid wouldnt you consider filter discs an aspect of growing..i mean there's sooo much to the discs its crazy. just use in place of metal lids and incubate in a humidity chamber..innoculate through the disc and tape the holes.. i too have a life outside of my computer but i can find time to research all aspects of growing if i am gonna make it a hobby. go to wal-mart and buy one, i paid like $30-35 i think. you must have been looking at pressure canners.. also check e-bay.. there was a thread about 2-3 days ago about someone wanting to trade or sell their cooker.. i have never grown without the discs.. the discs are a saviour for quick cultivation....

Wow, that's cheap for a pressure cooker. All the ones I've been looking at were on the internet, that's probably why they were so expensive. Thanks for the info, I'm going to look tomorrow. Sounds like those micron disks were a good buy....hope what everyone has been saying about them is true.

just so you know, of the 4 jars that i innoced monday, 2 are still pending, but the other 2 have by far the healthiest looking rhizomorphic growth ive ever seen first-hand. thats not saying much because im a newbie and have yet to birth a healthy cake, but these ones with the disks seem to be taking off with good hopes. and the last healthy 1-quart jar that i have and replaced the top with a disk looks to be on teh move, almost 70% colonized now. id have some pictures for you all but (damn me!) yesterday while taking some pix of some picked shrooms i dropped my friends $400 digi camera in his sink and fried it. guess that means no pix 4 a while :( damn
