Micron Magic or Coffee Filter
    #400649 - 09/22/01 07:34 AM (23 years, 2 months ago)

Anyone have any practical experience using both Micron Magic filters and Coffee Filters. I just want to use it for an
air filter in my terrarium and for my air pump. Is there any
real difference?? Should I spend the extra cash?

I find most contams start with the spores. The air is not as contaminated as some people think unless you have a mouldy loaf of bread next to you. Also, once the cake has colonized, it is much more resistant to contams.

Micron Magick Filter Disks are synthetic discs that are electrostaticly charged to ensure they filter 99.97% of the air-borne particles down to 0.3 microns. Coffee filters are pieces of material with holes in them.

Use your best judgement...get some filter disks which were designed to prevent contams...or steal your mom's coffee filters which would probably mean 100% failure.

id have to disagree with max about air not being dirty, just because of something that happened this week...

HQ and her jackal have been using agar, just started. no contams when poured/innoc'd/streaked or when clean cultures were used inside a sterile glovebox. all plates and all further transfers have been beautiful and clean. but they left their pouring container out in the open air when cleaning up on accident... all sorts of blacks and greens and yucks grew on it within a very short time; and they dont have moldy things or a moldy place, and since their plates didnt get contam'd, they know it was after it was removed from the sterile box. theyre not in a rural area, nor a dirty downtown place- basically they dont live in a place with a high pollen load OR *dirty* (smoggy) air. so, there *are* yuckies in the air (though they never had a contam prollem like this with casings/cakes). it did make them think about how unclean air can be.

but i would agree with him in that a colonized cake is pretty tough :)
