what material are synthetic filter discs?
    #4324803 - 06/22/05 03:01 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I'm curious to know if anyone knows the material that the micron magic synthetic filter discs, or the synthetic discs offered through Fungi Perfecti (different type altogether). I remember buying 500 filters for $60 from them, yet since they've closed, no one carries them at below $45/ hundred. Or if anyone knows of a company selling .3 micron filter paper in sheets or discs, could you please list that here. Not interested in tyvek or poly fill. Many thanks for your time and help.

The Micron Magic filtration material is made of Polypropelene... I know this cause i used to work for Kirby Vaccuums, selling them to people and we always made an emphasis on how good the new filter bags were.

I believe they are compressed plastic fibers, like tyvek..just different thicknesses...mycosupply.com I believe carries synthetic disks, but I'm not sure the cost..

Interesting...I always thought if felt like a micro-fiber felt or something. I wouldn't have even thought Polypropelene.

Dont you love kirby, lol. Worked thier for 4 months, sold 20 vacuums. Average sale price of 1200. Walked away with close to 8 grand. I actually use the demo pads on top of my jars, works great.

Yep. Working all the time. But it feels good to sell a 2000 dollar vacuum cleaner. Get high, then go sell, lol. The kirby sells itself, we used guerilla tactics to sell, like surrounding them with about 150 dirty pads, put them on thier legs, on the couch. anywhere everywhere. Had this one husband come home, and fucking tried to start a fight with me because she had just purchased it for the suggested retail of 1999.99, he was not to happy. Luckly my boss come in and calmed everyone down. Fun times. lol. You do travel alot selling.

Many thanks to everyone for writing in and helping out. I spent quite a while on the phone with Kirby trying to se if they sold their demo discs. I was bounced from department to department and no one could tell me who their manufacturer was, if not them, or if they were somehow available to purchase. I'm going to try a local distributor tomorrow, do you think they'll have a few hundred to part with? Cam they be convinced to part with them? I also tried to contact manufacturers of filter paper, and asked for something rated to .3 microns and autoclaveable. I got a lot of confusion, and no real leads. Any ideas on new avenues to research or places or materials to look into? I'm going to check on the polypropylene filter material that scatmanrav mentioned. Many thanks again!

I'm a material engineer. tyvek is high density polyethylene. I don't know about specific filter discs, but the previous posts of polypropylene and polyester are probably close. Nylon is common as well as normal paper/rayon (cellulose). I've used generic discs from my lab without any ill effects, but definitely steer clear of anything with paper in it. Paper is cellulose which basically polymerized glucose/sugar and will likely lead to contamination.

May I pick your mind & I am not refuting what you say about paper?

I thought the same - about anything with paper in it.

3M micropore tape is a paper tape. I have used it more times than I want to state, on wbs/rye/grain jar lids. I have not had it fail - anymore than tyvek.

Any ideas why that is?

Off the top of my head...

I've never actually dealt with that product, but I've seen the big machines that make it. Totally guessing here (I work with tape/labels too), but the adhesive is likely a very resistant barrier to contamination alone. 3M uses water-based emulsion adhesives (latexes with particle size around 100nm) rather than thermoplastic (continuous molten film) adhesive. There are some pretty nasty chemicals in the water-based adhesives (benzene, chloroform, toluene) that usually doesn't volatilize completely, ever!! and remain in the tape. As far as the paper itself, to control pore size, paper fibers are mechanically/chemically refined to a small size to get small pores, but then also require a lot of wet-end chemicals to maintain strength and surface properties, especially important for wet performance. These chemicals aren't quite as hazardous as the adhesive chemicals, but they likely wouldn't contaminate because of all the acid/functional groups. We've had some of those sitting in bottles for years and they are the same consistency now as ever. This might also explain why coffee filters wouldn't do much more than a dust cover. No chemical additives, big fibers and big pores.

That's pretty in depth, I hope it makes sense to someone. I'm kinda surprised that those micropore tapes actually use paper. It's such a shitty engineering material because of how inconsistent it is and all the additives/fillers that go in, but 3M has a vast supply (post-it notes).

Cotton is one of the common sources of cellulose that is dissolved with some acid and recrystallized in water to produce rayon fibers.

http://hiloftnw.com/ makes spunbond polyester material of all sorts.

Years back - I had a big roll of one of their products & it looked like & worked as well as the Micron-Magic filters.

They can make HUGE rolls to about any thickness & Spec you want.
