is casing really necessary?
    #6442336 -

i'm about to start up some monotubs, WBS spawned to straw. was just wondering if a casing layer is really necessary, or will that just be an added step in which to introduce contams? any and all input is greatly appreciated. :mushroom2:

Contams can happen at any time. Any time you open your lid, it's a risk. That said, if you follow proper procedures with casings, you will be fine. A casing layer is recommended more than 9.5 times out of 10. It just brings the extra water that a superior flush will need.

People have had success out of non-cased grows, but from what I've seen, the best flushes came off a case. I'd have to recommend doing it.

A properly pasteurized casing layer most of the time will not introduce contamination,Your substrate will be fully colonized and resilient by the time you apply it.in fact you are more likely to see contamination in your wbs jars until you get good sterile procedures down.Cubes can be fruited uncased(I have never had much luck with it however)You will be MUCH better off casing,

Personally, I've never noticed one whit of difference with straw, cased or uncased. Straw holds plenty of water without a casing layer. With other substrates such as manure, a casing layer will deliver much better results though.

The advantage to leaving a substrate uncased is that fruits usually come a week or so earlier.

Same here . I'm not noticing much of a difference between cased or uncased poo either .

Cubes don't need to be cased , and after 2 years of results to go by , I'm pretty much doing away with casing cubes

When you do not case, do you still fruit when fully colonized or do you put it in a day or 2 earlier?

just fruit when they are fully colonized

HERETIC!!!!  First you run an ultrasonic nearly 24 hrs/day, and now this.  What is the world coming to?

Come to think of it, running the ultrasonic this much pretty much eliminates the need for a casing layer. GENIUS, hippiechick.

I was going to say in the perfect environment casings help little but they still alway provide moist which means less substrate shrinkage and better flushes later on in your cropping cycle. In less than perfect conditions casing are a Godsend don't let anyone tell you different! GL

When I first started, I thought the same thing as you. At least in my case, casing was the only way I could get the cakes to fruit (the non-cased ones just sat there and dried up).

I'd recommend you case, or case %50, since it has as much chance of help you as hurting you.

Not if you have some coir and bulk sub mixed together or something similar NO. Its not, but many people here will want me shot for that, but you don't need to case in certain, well cases

Your RH just wasn't high enough. Cakes have to have near 100% RH to not dry out. If the RH isn't high enough, it will use all of its internal water supply just to try to stay alive. Since water is VERY necessary for fruiting, it never has enough available to do so.

Casing layers help retain moisture, and that's the reason you had success with those.

I'm doing wbs spawned to strait coir. should I case or not? with all the pros saying casing isn't necessary i'm thinking of not casing it. I like the Idea of getting my fruits earlier.
what should I do?

Just use 50/50 Vermiculite & Perlite, with a little coir thrown in.
No pH adjustment required.
You will get better results, more flushes & harvest weight.
By adding a casing cover.

If you doubt that.
Try one with & one without.
Side by side, in the same conditions.

I have , and as much as I hate to say it , I've found you to be incorrect on this , as far as cubes go . My bulk containers are always the same and always weigh the same . 5 pounds poo + 2 quarts spawn for a total weight of 7 pounds .

In the last two years , I have kept track of all my yield , even if it's just a single mushroom coming off a case . It gets weighed and recorded .

Casing has not made a bit of difference in my circumstances . My biggest 1 first flush ever , 1,500+ grams , was uncased . I have put cased and non cased containers right next to each other on the same shelf of the green house and compared results , made a post about it a year or so ago , and have found no difference . Some cased subs might out produce the uncased ones at times , but it's completely opposite with the next 2 . Overall though , it balances out and I have found NO benefit , from a yield point of view , from casing cubes .

I do find this rather interesting, as I'm sure a lot of folks do as well - as my results show the opposite.

What are your grow conditions (light cycles, substrate [and depth], RH, FAE, etc?)

I've also found a casing layer to be of little benefit if other conditions are kept at optimum, as HC reported.

However, a casing layer allows us to be a bit sloppier on conditions. For example, if you have to leave for work every day for 10 hours or more, a casing layer will protect your substrate while you can't be there to mist. If you can hang around and babysit your crop, it makes little to no difference.

Note this applies to cubes only. Other species fruit poorly or not at all without a casing layer, and many edibles won't even fruit on a pasteurized casing, it must be untreated.
