Need urgent advice
    #643264 - 05/24/02 10:40 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

A friend has two trays of cubanis--one cased about a week ago, the other cased two days ago. Casing method is verm/peat/oyster shell/lime, 1/2 inch on bottom, 4 1/2 pt. crumbled cakes (about 1 inch) topped with 1/2 inch casing mix. THE PROBLEM: he is going out of town in two days for TWO WEEKS and there is NO ONE who can tend these mushrooms. What should he do?

Trays are currently in warm fruiting chamber (he thought he could speed up the process and harvest the first flush before he left) but it is apparent that that won't happen now. Now he needs to slow things down, but if he lowers the temp won't that just cold shock them into pinning? What about lowering the temp and putting them in the dark? What about deep scratching them to slow things down?

What will his trays likely look like in two weeks? One tray has about 1/4 of the surface covered in mycelia and the mycelia has not started to come to the surface yet on the other tray.

Any advice on what to do in order to have something left in two weeks would be greatly appreciated (by my friend).

The only thing I can thing of is that your friend should stick the trays in the fridge until he gets back. With any luck, this will slow the mycelial growth down enough. That's one hell of a cold shock, though.

Anyone else have any thoughts?
