Syringe Liquid Mycelia
    #2627025 - 05/01/04 06:20 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Usually a 'spent' spore syringe is set aside for later sterilization and re-use. I have found something that works pretty good and I thought that I'd share it with the group.  When you use the last of the syringe, save tiny little bit in the syringe.  An 8th of a cc is fine, as long as their is some liquid in the syringe still.  Boil water and pour it into a half pint jar that has a tablespoon of karo syrup.  Pour about 100mL into the jar, stir.  Allow to cool.  Then suck this liquid water up into your near empty syringe and incubate. Instead of having to wait for your spores to germinate, colonize, re-colonize more bulk substrate, colonize a casing layer, pin, fruit, and harvest to obtain more inoculant (more spores), you are doing so while everything else is going on.  When you use this syringe, it will be filled with already colonizing mycelia, rather than spores which take a few days for germination.  Good luck as always comrades, keep those myco buddies poppin up!

what happens when the mycelium fully colinizes the syringe and you can't get it out,do you use yours before that happens?

Or, if you're really a fanatic, you could fill a liter bottle with a cup of Karo and the rest with some distilled water (then microwave of course) and have enough myc to inoculate a park! :mushroom2:

This is mainly a way to get a little bit more for your syringe buck. If you figure you are doing a full run of shrooms, you'd inoculate, incubate, birth, flush, harvest. Takes about three weeks. Two weeks from inoculation with this method and you can inoc your jars and let them incubate while your flushes are occuring. For bulk, the only true way to gro', you change the timeline a little bit. Usually you won't get a huge wad of mycelia because their isn't too much air in the syringe to support alot of growth. But if you shake it up well every 3-5 days after you see the growth for the first time, it'll be enough for 10-12 jars easily. Good luck.

Should the pint jar with karo and water be pc'd before you suck it up with the sringe?

Yes Absolutly.

Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.

I haven't found it necessary. If the jar and lids are soaked in bleach water and washed thoroughly, then wiped with rubbing alcohol and dried, it seems to work fine. The key is making sure that the water you pour in over the karo is boiling, a rapid rolling boil. This sterilizes the water and the heat of the water will sterilize the Karo syrup. That is my experienec, at least. If you want to, put it in the PC for about 10 minutes on 5psi.
