FOOD FOR THOUGHT and possibly
    #6422718 -

Checking in the cupboards,
for something to make a pasta salad with.

I noticed Couscous & Acini di pepe
Both of which are types of very tiny - very hard pasta.
Acini di pepe is about the size of millet seeds.
Couscous is even smaller.

For fun, I hydrated some Acini di pepe in hot water.
Then, rinsed & drained it.

Resulting in this.

The question being:grin:
I wonder if this was steamed in a jar.
(lid rigged for wbs/grain spawn)
But NOT PC'ed.
Only steamed, like a PF jar.
Then, cooled.
If injected with an LC, IF it would colonize?

The stuff is a little sticky.
So, it might be supplemented with some gypsum.
Or, even fine ground Perlite.
To prevent clumping.

It might make an inexpensive NO PC bulk spawn.

I don't remember where or exactly when but I think I remember someone mentioning the use of pasta and we all decided that somthing would HAVE to be added becuase the pasta would clump and slow myc. drasticlly. I don't remember if it ever got tried but I think it would work... You should try it out and make a grow log if it works:D

The "search" function shows lots of "pasta" threads.
That go no where.
but, most are substrate related.
Not spawn related.

But please for the nOObs don't try the experimental things that are talked about if you get discouraged eay. I love agars thought and he comes up with a lot of great stuff but get a few well tested grows under yourbelt untill these are tested but others that won't get discouraged because for me aqnd agar it's only a hobby,so if it fails if fails. Oh well we'll find some other things to try.

Just a littlethought to help other ppl out.
Oh and I'm kinda out of it right now too so don't listen to me.

I had good luck getting organic wheat pasta to colonize just fine. The trick was to cook it just slightly, enough to get a little water into it before PCing so that it's not soggy afterwards.

It was a horrible fruiter, even when cased, but it might can make decent spawn.

Never tried it without a PC only though.

I've colonized couscous just fine before, just don't remember if it was pc'd or steamed. But for the record, it will colonize, now agar it's up to you to do something impressive with it, I never even fruited mine!

Couscous/perlite spawn would probably work and wouldn't require a PC.

I guess I will make up a few small jars of Couscous/Perlite.
With a gas exchange filter lid.
Steam them, cool, inoculate, incubate & see how it goes.

I made strait whole wheat pasta inoculated with LC in a pint jar with decent sized hole filled with polyfill. The problem I fear was moisture, not enough of it. If you put some moisture retention stuff in there like verm I bet you would be on to something =)

I would love to see what you can do in a lab and a few 100k for research.

Oh well :stoned:

I think (by the looks of it).

WE MAY HAVE A WINNER
(easy spawn for bulk without a PC )

Couscous added to boiling water.
Taken off heat.
Lid placed on the pot.
It hydrated nice & fluffy.

Placed some Perlite in a bowl.
Added a couple tablespoons BRF
Added a little water & stirred.
(so BRF would adhere to the Perlite)
Added equal amount Couscous.
Mixed all ingredients well.

Filled jars 2/3rds full
Noted, content will shake & no starchy sludge.

Steaming now.
In a PC, w/lid on, but NO PRESSURE.

The only reason I would speculate might cause failure.
Is a fairly low overall moisture content.
If that turns out to be the case.
As already noted.
Adding some hydrated vermiculite, should cure that.

Well agar, do you have any plans that require any material that you simply cant afford at this point? I would be willing to send a few dollars your way for the sake of mycology if you set up some kind of donation thing.

LOL,
Hell with the grant.

APPLY for a PATENT.

After Tippin & I get through with dinner.
(this Gal's cooking is to good to delay eating)

I am going to make another batch.
With some Verm added.
No sense dragging this out.
Might as well run them side by side.
To see which does better.

I added to much BRF.
It was sludgy, in the container.
This looks FAR BETTER.

Verm, Perlite, Couscous & BRF.
Equal parts, except BRF.
BRF was about 4 tablespoons.
All hydrated & mixed together.

Mixture looks good.
Hydrate to the point.
With a firm squeeze.
It would drip a few drops.

Filled quart jars a bit over 2/3rds full.

Made metal gas exchange lids.
Small tyvek squares taped over holes.
With Micropore tape.
(anybody can make)

(with lids loose)
STEAMING 90 Minutes.
In a PC, but NO PRESSURE.
