Terranium construction and casing questions

Hey everyone.
I am about to start my first ever attempt at growin cubes. (I live in New Zealand so I haven't even ever seen a cube - just our other crazy kinds o trippy fungus.
So obviously I have some questions. I've done a lot of reading and searchin through posts but there are just a few things which are still unclear.

1) For a beginner, do you think that the best substrate to go with is 2 parts vermiculite, 1 part brown rice flower, and one part water? Or something else? This seems to be the most common substrate around. I was wondering about adding some cow shit?

2) When casing the jars, what is a good substrate to use for doing that, and what is a good method for casing? (Eg layering, thickness of layers etc?)

3) So you put the casings in a terranium right? Can anyone reccomend a good simple terranium construction (Remembering I am in New Zealand and "Just go to wallmart bla bla bla" does not apply here) but I think I can still get MOST of the things you guys mention, but its more expensive for things like electric items like heater pads and stuff. So I am wanting a CHEAP and EFFECTIVE terranium design / idea.

Thanks for your help. Even if you guys can point me in the direction of some relevant links that would be great.

I recommend for your first time you follow the most simplistic method, the PF TEK. Go to http://www.fanaticus.com and read all your questions away. All will be answered here.
