Newbie Casing Questions

Hi, I am doing casing [simple verm] for the first time and have some questions.
The batch is PF/PF tech; I did 8 jars, 3 cakes sliced into slices distributed
over the lower verm layer [about 1/2" deep], the rest crumbled to fill the holes
for what is probably a 3/4" substrate layer. On top of that a 1/2" casing layer.
After doing the casing, I cold-shocked the fruiting container for 14 hrs in
the fridge. I am keeping the terrarium in darkness. Also, I believe that my casing
layer is a little too dry, so I have the humidifier on high 4 times for 1 min/day.
Since the cold-shocking, a week has passed, and I see very little activity going on.

Questions:

* How long would it roughly [normally?] take for the substrate to colonize the casing?
* Should I have the light on [12hr/12hr] or have the terrarium in darkness and turn the light cycle on only once the casing is completely colonized?

Any other advice will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hello:). A few suggestions that may help. Your casing layer need only be 1/4 inch thick. And the slow growth of the casing layer may have been from using dry verm. Some pressurecooked  Moist-verm would have worked better. Then before cold shocking, you needed to let the mycelia recoup from the trama of breaking it apart and let it grow into the casing layer until you see signs of mycelia growing through the casing layer before trying the cold shocking technique. You may not even need cold shocking, most casings will fruit with out it. Having your humidifier  on can possibly Matt the casing layer and make it like a shell over your crumbled cakes, not letting the mycelia break through. Take a clean fork and deep scratch the casing to break it up  and if it appears to be matted, go ahead and remove the whole casing layer and add a new one. :smile:bluhoney

Thank you! I did sterilize the verm, but in the oven (i don't think much moisture escaped, i think it was too dry to begin with). I should buy a pressure cooker.

Which method would you suggest for obtaining verm with optimal moisture content?
