Newbie Casing Questions

How thick should the casing be? Should the casing be on top of the cake, or all around (assuming the cake is not crumbled). Should the cake be crumbled? (I realize this is an opinion question, but hearing pros and cons would be great).

I cut one cake up into about 1/4" thick slices like cucumbers then crumble another cake to fill in the spaces between the circles (in an 8x8 inch pan) as far as depth i go 1/4" verm on bottom with 1/4" on top and havnt had problems yet
