Need help fast, friend on verge of death
    #6392779 -

Ok first of all thanks for bothering to even open this thread, im scared shitless at this point so any help is GREATLY appreciated. My story relates to a friend of mine who has become extremely sick over the past few days, he is currently in Intensive Care and doctors are still trying to figure out what is going on. Sitting here pondering what is wrong and not having any answers is really bothering me,so knowing that there is a wealth of information here and some very intelligent people i thought i would give it a shot.

Last sunday my friend awoke at 5am in the middle of a seizure. He recalls waking up, with extreme difficulty in breathing and his memory ends there. His girlfriend told me that his eyes were rolling in the back of his head, he was uncontrollably spasming and fell to the ground. She called an ambulance and he went to hospital. I saw him at about 2pm that day and just before I arrived he fitted again, for around 2 minutes. At first doctors suspected epilepsy however this was not to be the case. Later that night he fitted another 3 times, and on the 4th time the fit did not end, after 5 minutes the doctors put him into a self induced coma to halt the seizure and to try and assess his condition further and figure out what was going on.

He has had a CAT scan and a brain tumor and stroke have been ruled out, so has epilepsy. He was getting an EEG yesterday, I saw him last night and he was slowly being brought out of the coma and was very unaware of his surroundings. Meningitis and encephalitis have supposably been cancelled out but im thinking otherwise. Today he was supposed to go into surgery for a brain biopsy but before that he was rushed to emergency because his brain began to swell and he nearly died. I spoke to his brother before and he is in ICU, vitals are all ok but obviously he is not doing well at all.

A bit of history, he has never ever suffered any symptoms remotely close to epilepsy ie. Seizures, fits etc and has had no neurological disorders in the past. He is 20 years of age and seems to be in good health until now. He is a recreational drug user but no drugs have been used for about 3-4 weeks, this i am sure of.

I guess I decided to make a thread here because i dont know where else to go. If anyone can point me in a direction of what they think may be the cause I would love to hear it. The information I have provided is brief and I guess you could say somewhat inadequate but I feel compelled to do something. I have been scouring the internet but its like trying to find a needle in a haystack, I dont know where to start.

Any reply is greatly appreciated!

Epilepsy? I have never heard of epilepsy causing the brain to swell. He is at one of the best hospitals in Melbourne (Australia) im sure he doesn't need a second opinion.

Thanks for the reply but they have ruled out epilepsy and i have never seen epilepsy effect someone like this?

Any other replies are appreciated....

3-4 weeks, what did he take?

He was a regular ecstasy user. Never suffered any ill effects from the drug. The weekend where he last used drugs i believe he took ecstasy and a bit of coke. Not to sound arrogant but he has used these two drugs in combination a number of times and suffered no ill effects. Even if this was detrimental to his health, its not possible for it to effect him 4 weeks later is it?

Sorry to be vague, but im trying to find out as much as i can. Thanks for the replies so far.

the sudden cause of seizures without any prior history points towards an acute episode. My guess would be bleeding in the brain. When blood gets on top of the neurons they start randomly firing and when it gets on top of enough of them it causes seizures sometimes on a massive scale. Also cocaine is a vasoconstrictor and could have constricted some of the deeper capillaries in his brain and made them prone to burst. Usually this would show up on the cat scan but they might want to take an MRI. Another way to look at this diagnosis would be to check his blood labs and look at the platlet levels. If they are low then the body is trying to stop that bleed. I'm not saying the Drs haven't checked for this already but it sounds like it could be a deep capillary hemorrhaging.

I wish the best for your friend and make sure you are there to talk ot him even if he is unconscious. Presence can be enough sometimes to help them fight out of it. Good luck.

Yeah brain bleeding is the first thing that came to my mind too. Maybe it's only a very small area so it was overlooked by the doctors?

MDMA and cocaine both, AFAIK, lower the seizure threshold of the brain and induce excitatory neurotransmitters. It's possible that after his using those drugs, not enough inhibitory neurotransmitters or too many excitatory neurotransmitters were firing, causing the seizure. Have the docs checked his endocrine system and neurotransmitter levels?

Sounds like a Grand Mall seizure, could be from a Brain tumor putting pressure on his brain or bleeding on the brain, can be a number of things.

Thanks heaps guys i really appreciate the responses. Brakson i wasn't meaning to be rude, i was just saying i had never heard of epilepsy causing such a severe case as the one my friend is in now. Sorry if you felt like i was having a go.

Psyclone and dblaney thankyou very much for your replies. DB, im not sure if they have checked neurotransmitter levels or anything. My information is sparse, thats part of the problem im going on nothing here so thats why im trying to get some answers. What your saying does sound like a defenite possibility, however i dont understand how doctors wouldn't have identified that straight away? Maybe the CAT scan didn't show it. I think they are awaiting results of the MRI so hopefully that will indicate something.

Also Psiclone, im trying to see him every day and comfort him when i can. He is unable to open his eyes or talk but seems very restless and ill say something like "hey buddy im here for you" and he will squeeze my hand so he is obviously aware of what is going on. I just hope he isn't in pain.

Im going to see him today so hopefully i will find out more.

what about a brain aneurysm (sp?). a friend of mine died last summer from one. complained about a headache for a few minutes, then started seizing, then died a few days later in the hospital.

my girlfriend is epileptic. hers is under control pretty much with meds and stuff. she still seizures every 4 weeks or so. but they only last for around 30 seconds at a time.

ALTHOUGH, she had a fit about 4 months ago exactly like your friends. She accidently forgot to take a couple meds for a few days and ended up seizing around 4 times in one night, 2 of which were over 1 min (which was not normal for her).

They took her blood levels and realized her system had totally run out of a certain type of medication and thus her brain was misfiring like crazy.

Anyways, from MY experience, sounds like epilepsy (though a very very bad case of it).

Not sure what else to tell you, the human brain is so f-ing complex it's annoying sometimes  :frown:

Wish you and your friend the best.

Hey guys once again thanks to all who have replied. Just came home from seeing him then. Early this morning he was rushed into an emergency operation due to further brain swelling so things are a bit grim at the moment.

Doctors have told us it is nothing that they first suspected ie. epilepsy, brain tumor, stroke, aneurysm, meninigits etc. Right now they are treating it as a very rare condition and a team of 5 specialists are flying in from interstate to try and figure out what is going on. His mother called me this morning with news that he nearly died this morning, so im in a bit of shock, i just hope he can hold on. He is critical but stable so hopefully things can only improve from here.

Thanks to all who have replied, its helped me try and comprehend the terrible battle my friend is in right now.

Ill update the thread when i hear more if anyone is interested...

Peace

Hang on my friend. Just always remember that death is just another part of life, something that we all must face. If his body decides to give in, you can be comforted that he is at peace; death assures it my friend

All the best.

Im doing okay i guess. The thing that is hurting the most is not knowing what it is and not being able to do anything. Here he is, in intensive care, with this brain basically open to relieve the pressure and still its a mystery as to what is causing it?

I cant imagine how his family are going at the moment. His dad was very distraught yesterday so i pray he is doing ok.

Latest news is that he is stable, but still critical. The way i look at it, im just going to take it one step at a time. Yesterday morning he was lucky to have made it through the night, now he is stable so i guess thats a small improvement. I just wish there was something i could do...

Thanks everyone, it really does mean heaps to have some support. Im only 20 and have never gone through anything like this, thankfully all my friends and family are in very good health. Ive come to the conclusion that after all this, life should not be taken for granted.
