Helping the homeless

Having lived on the street for a while in my youth I always feel the need to help out when I can.  One thing I will never do is give money to a homeless person, but I have no problem buying things for or giving things to homeless people.  And last night I was again called upon to help out a person in need.

I was walking from my hotel to the store to buy cigarettes at about 11pm and I came across a homeless woman.  She had fallen of a wall that evening and hit her head pretty hard.  She had a nasty bump on her forehead that looked quite painful. I stopped and talked to her for a bit.  She seemed happy to meet a friendly person and was pleased to tell me about herself.  Then she asked if I had an aspirin because her head hurt. I told her I had some at the hotel and invitied her to walk back there if she liked.  So she came back to the hotel with me and I got her some medicine and then offered to make some coffee.  She was thrilled to have some coffee so I brewed a pot and we sat and talked over a cup.

Her story was interesting (though I won't bother getting into it here).  After about 20 minutes she said she should go.  When she was leaving she thanked me and commented that it was nice to meet someone who was friendly and helpful.  I told her I was suprised that she actually came to the hotel because it could've been dangerous if I was a bad person.  She also said she was suprised that I allowed her into the room and didn't act like I was afraid she might steal something.  I guess we just both felt comfortable that niether of us was a bad person.

So she went on her way.  I offered to let her use the shower before she left if she wanted to clean up (I remember that was the worst part about being homeless, trying to keep clean) but she declined.  But she thanked me and seemed genuinely happy to have met me then went on her way.

It was a kinda weird experience but I felt good about it when she was gone. A little kindness and a helping hand makes a big difference in a persons life at times and I hope I brightened her night a bit.  So reach out and help those in need, you'll feel good about yourself.

that was nice of you.  :thumbup: i guess most homeless people are so used to being treated as degenerates or drug addicts that good old fashioned courtesy and compassion could become a shock.

i was thinking about doing some habitat for humanity this winter. i need to get on that and stop talking about it.
