Phil & Friends Fall Tour 2003
    #2090132 - 11/10/03 05:26 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I think there was a post like this from way back in September but it has long since been buried.

So who's going to see them?  Or who was lucky enough to see them recently in San Francisco?  I've been listening to Sept. 25th and 26th from the Warfield and they're both phenominal sounding shows.  Both shows are official soundboard releases that are available for download  here.

The three Denver shows are coming up soon and then they're on to Chicago.  I may splurge and go to all three nights in Chicago even though I can't really afford it.  But hey, it's Phil & Friends.

Ratdog was just in Cleveland, but I HAD to freakin' work, and missed out. Heard it was decent.

The Denver show I saw was amazing.  As soon as they started playing Shakedown Street it was all smiles and dancing

Glad you had a good time at the Denver show.  I heard the flu spread around their like wild fire and the whole band except for Phil were sick by the time they got to Chicago.  Warren was visibly sick, hacking between verses and constantly wiping off layers of sweat.  They played really well though I had a blast in Chicago.

The first and second nights were very special.  Here Comes Sunshine and Cold Rain and Snow were my favs from the first set.  St. Steven, Crazy Fingers and Cumberland Blues were my favs from the second set.  Good high energy show I thought.

The second show on Thursday was my favorite but I am a little biased because I was really high on acid at this one.  I was lucky enough to find some blotters, Eyeballs I think they were called.  They were expensive, $8 a hit but they were worth it because finally they were of an acceptable potency.  I took three and didn't stop dancing the whole night.  I probably even danced throughout the set break.  The set list for this show was amazing:

Set 1: Jam>
Friend Of The Devil>
Direwolf>
Alabama Getaway>
Blue Sky>
Mississippi Half-Step>
Doin' That Rag

Set 2: Jam> Tennessee Jed
Scarlet Begonias>
Fire On The Mountain>
Spacy Jam>
Lady With A Fan>
Goin' Down The
Road Feeling Bad>
Inspiration Jam>
Terrapin Station> Jam>
China Cat Sunflower>
I Know You Rider

Donor Rap/Intros
E:Box Of Rai

The acid made me feel so connected to every song it was really a moving experience.  It had been a long time since I tripped like this.  The Friend of the Devil sounded so sweet.  The Dire Wolf was so trippy and just seemed so fitting.  OMG Blue Sky!?  And then the Doin' that Rag just launched me into another world complelety.  Second set was probably even more amazing.  I just got lost in the dancing and the swirls of colors and good vibes coming from everyone around me.  Then I crashed that night with some friends I barely really knew in their Marriot room right in Downtown looking out onto the skyline and Lake Michigan.  We were on the 42nd floor listening to Dylan, smoking lots of pot and drinking a little.  I just stared out the window for hours in astonishment.  The moon looked like a fragile cresent dangling from one the the skyscrapers.

The third night I was not too impressed with to be honest.  And I'm not difficult to please at all.  I just thought the show was kinda weak. The jamming was uninspired and often didn't really lead anywhere.  I'm sure part of it had to do with the fact that I was tired and not tripping like the previous night but even looking at the rest of the audience, I could tell people were rady to tear it up but first the band had to tear it up, which they never really did, with the exception of Shakedown Street and All Along the Watchtower.  And also I saw a fight right in front of the stage.  That's not very cool.  And it was sold out unlike the two previous nights so it was a little too crowded for my liking.  Very little room to dance.  But who am I to complain.  I had a blast at all three shows and I'm glad I went.

On a side note, I was really happy to see some good doses going around.  I heard about these new Winterland blotters to celebrate that DVD coming out about the Closing of Winterland.  A guy I met in line had just bought a ten strip of Winterland.  He was probably the most interesting person I met the whole time there.  He was in his fifties, very down to Earth, single and just on a quest to enjoy life.  He loved LSD and had so many stories about driving in his convertable from show to show, with the top down, and a head-full of acid.  He told me stories just about driving and looking up at the stars in amazement.  He told me no matter how cold it is, he drives with the top down if he really wants to expereince the drive.  He took a few hits in line and told me his plan was to drive 3 hours back home after the show, with the top down of course.  He just struck me as an incredibly interesting person.  I remember looking at him from afar during the show that night.  He had a huge grin from ear to ear as they started playing She Said, She Said.  But that guy just amazed me and I hope to run into him again.  It's hard to meet someone who enjoys life as much as this guy.  He was an inspiration to me.  Well my rambling here is done.  Just had to get some words down.

Glad to hear you had an awesome time, and finding doses is of course a plus.

I get to see Phil twice the week after this one - Dec 2, 5 at the Beacon in NYC!! Should be awesome. I'll be on the lookout for those Winterland blotters (and the eyes). Do you know what they look like?

Also - I agree, that's a killer setlist!

I didn't get a chance to see what the Winterland ones look like. I wanted to buy some but I barely had enough money do get through the tolls to get back home that night. I actually asked the guy I was talking to in line what they looked like but he hadn't had a chance to look at them. And the ones I had, I only saw them very briefly because I was in a hurry to get them into my mouth. But at a quick glance they actually looked like the fractals-- swirly colors mostly. I don't know what the Eyeblass are supposed to look like. But you're in for a good time. I think Phil's band has gotten progressively better over the past few years.

Yeah I definitely pushed my luck financially but it was worth it. I just dug myself a deeper hole though. I really gotta throw my credit card in the fire.

See had I still had my card I would of went and did the same as you but I tossed my plastic away after the summer of 2002. I got myself in a nice sized hole  but I seen alot of good shows, went to some nice festivals and bought alot of CD's.  Those things are the devil, 4 or 5 days on the road with no shower then see a cheap hotel, easy to snag a shower and a few hours sleep in a real bed and not even relize the bills your racking up.  Oh well.  It's painful to admit this but I still owe a couple hundred on it :shake:
