Giving supermaket food to homeless people
    #1593151 - 05/30/03 02:46 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I used to work in the meat department of a supermarket and it made me sick to see the amount of meat and other foods that are thrown away each day.

Can someone tell me why this food can not be frozen and then sent to homeless shelters and whatnot?

To protect the supermarket or shelter, the homeless people could sign a waver saying that they will not sue.

Why isn't this being done?

Makes me sick.

The man thinks it would be a health risk giving them food that is past due.
They dont want to get sued. But homless peoples guts are made of Iron, eating out of trash cans is more dangerus then eating properly handeled food.

I have heard of such things happening.

Get on the phone and start talking. Make it happen.

All they have to do is freeze the food until it's at it's destination.

I know. I am not saying it will make any one sick. I am just saying there could be some scammers out there lookin to make a buck and get of the street. That is why they dont feed the homless any thing but nonparishable foods. If you could get it to a church they will cook it up and serve it.

I work at one of the dining halls on my college campus, and the amount of perfectly good food we throw away there is just horrendous as well. I don't understand why some sort of non-profit organization can't be started up that would go around to food places, take their waste food, and provide it to homeless people somehow.

START A NON-PROFIT!!!!! If you are in a position (work at a place) or know of a place that throws away tons of food....and you know of a church/shelter/soup kitchen etc. that feeds hungry people, suggest an affiliation. Find out what arguments are made for not doing it and find ways to counter them. Don't sit and ask "why doesn't somebody do this?" instead, do it yourself. You DO have the power to make a difference and it seems like both of you (Learyfan and RebelSteve) are in a position to do it.

I don't think there are many homeless people in my city, and I don't work at a supermarket

oh...well I'm sure there must be some hungry people....you don't have to be homeless to be needy.  I realized after I posted that you said you USED to work at a grocery store.  But there are still things you can do to help....not that I need to tell YOU that...I'm sure you do your share of good deeds!

A woman I know used to do that, She talked to the manager and they kept the food intact and she gave it away. It was amazing, fully good bags of chips and cookies and meats and all kinds of shit.

I work part time in the cafe at a health food store.. We throw away (compost) an obscene amount of bread and other assorted food throughout the day.. I also wondered why it isn't being given away. I was told that they just can't get anyone to come pick it up.

with the amount of food americans throw away each day we could feed the world. the only reason there are starving people is greed and foolishness. There are plenty of resorces to go around, for now.

When the longshoremen went on strike last year, much of the perishable food that was stuck on the docks was donated to food banks on the west coast. Needy people got food and corporations got a tax write-off on food that would have never made it to market anyway. There are plenty of resources, and luckily food is a renewable resource, but things like this don't happen by themselves. It takes creative people working in an old and inefficient market. I don't know how "efficient" I want my food production to be, though. I feel pretty disconnected from the food I eat as it is. Anyway, I think this is a solvable problem.
Politically you have a tough fight on your hands. Mad cow disease has been found in Canadian beef recently, and although the chances of you actually contracting the disease (unless you're eating the brain or spinal cord, oh and maybe hamburger meat  ) are almost nothing, this has people kinda spooked when it comes to beef safety in general.
One good approach might be to work on a local level. I don't know all the laws, but a smaller/locally-owned chain might help you if they didn't have to do too much work. I know many culinary schools donate all the food they prepare to shelters.

I work at a grocery store here and we give all our waste food away. Like 3 shopping carts over the top filled with fod every night

Go through the orange yesterday

I watched intently for a while to both sides, infront of me and behind me.
I was impressed to learn there was another way to look... UP!
More impressive still was the fact that there were beautiful stars in this direction
Most amazing fact of all was the prospect of another direction when I was done with up. DOWN! Which, based on the feel through my toes would be a fine sandy beach!

That's a great response pseudopod. It really IS a tough legal battle. That's what kinda sux bout America. I don't know what to say. Thousand points of light. The points are FAR more brilliant than the person who coined that phrase.
