New grower and board user...
    #6360933 -

Hey everyone, I just stumbled onto this website trying to find some information about growing my own mushrooms.

I am currently five days into my Homestead EZ Grow Mushroom Kit. I was wondering a few things:

1. Has anyone used this kit before and how was the outcome/results?
2. When the mycelium and compost are combined, is there anything I can add for nutrients to help my mushrooms grow larger and/or faster?
3. As I said I started the process five days ago, the sack that contains the rye seeds and mushrooms spores hasn't really changed at all. It just sort of looks dirtier on the inside, but thats about it. Is that normal?

Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm sure I will be around here much more.

your spawn bag should start showing signs of mycelial growth soon if it is viable. as for adding to the compost, i would not recommend doing it, because by doing so, you will have to learn how to pasteurize or sterilize it and seeing that you bought a grow kit, i doubt your down for that.

Also compost is about as nutritive as it gets for mushroom substrate. When you start getting growth in your bag you'll see little white spots which are mushroom mycelium.

In the mean time do some reading.

those should get you started.

Good luck.

Welcome to the board. I agree do some reading...it helps pass the time especially on your first grow. I would look into cloning with liquid culture (it's just honey and water) and making spore prints. If you get some mushrooms you want to be ready to keep the process going.

1) Nope, I bought everything I needed at various stores around town.
2) I wouldn't fuck with it any. In fact if it came prepasturized don't even open it until you are ready to use it.
3) The colonizing is the most painstakingly longest thing especially for a first grow. Just be patient. Try to forget it for a week or so. Agitate the bag only once any ware from 30-50% colonization.

:thumbup:GL on your grow and welcome to the Shroomery!

Yeah, I'm pretty much going insane waiting for them to start growing. Haha.

I've only been able to experience mushrooms once before, so I all the waiting is killing me.

I KNOW RIGHT!

I had first trip at the end of September. So I decided to start growing, still haven't tripped again, and I get to stare at these shrooms. The caps are JUST starting to open stretching out the vales. My mouth is watering... Friday..

If that kit does you good you should have some fruits before the end of January (don't hold me to that).

Thats what I was going to say
I've read a lot of good stuff on rye and compost. Seems pretty fast.
As long as you keep it under optimal conditions, but you'll cross that bridge when ya get to it.

I suppose the kit is supposda be simi-automated or something?

Yeah. A two-step process.

-Shake the spores (on a Q-Tip head) into the rye. Allow to sit at 80 degrees until the entire or most of the bag is white and fuzzy.
-Then mix with the 5 lb. bag of compost. Place in the plastic bin and seal it. Allow it to sit at 80 degrees until the mushrooms are ready to drop their spores. Then harvest.

It seemed the best way for me, especially since I've never really tried to grow anything. But after reading all the guides and such, I think my next grow will be PF cakes.

Major DOWNGRADE!
From rye to PF??

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4576865#4576865

Order more of those rye mycobags if you don't have or cant get a pressure cooker. I'm already considering it, but I'm poor so I'll prolly just find a cheap pressure cooker.

The compost is great (especially if ya can make your own). But you could also look into h/poo (http://www.tennstud.com/page/page/1673025.htm) or at least coco coir.

Hit up the search link at the top of this page, and enlighten yourself while your waiting on your current grow.
This hobby is fun and addictive as long as you don't let the occasional inevitable failure set you back.

If this kit works as well as I've heard it can and does (2 oz. of dried shrooms per flush) then I may just order a refill. They just send you the rye bag, spores, and more compost.
