Casing before the cakes finish
    #629657 - 05/13/02 07:23 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

My cakes aren't done, but they have been growing for quite some time now, and don't seem to be doing much. I want to try casing before they're done... any pointers? I know I risk more contams, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks folks

flame the hell out of a sharp knife. get a large ziplock bag. and work in a glovebox. here's what you do. put some 90% or better alcohol in the bag and slosh it around to clean the bag. dump the alcohol out. flame he holy crap out of your knife. dump the cake into the baggis and cut out the uncolonized part out of the cake. crumble the rest of the cake and mix it with a couple more crumbled cakes and case. work entirel in a glove box and you should be fine

Yeah you could do that.
But, most people dont have a glovebox, and do just fine with cakes.

Ive done this before. All you do is wipe down a clean knife with some alcohol, slice off the uncolonized cake, and then toss that out. Just use what you have colonized and crumble and case... No big deal really. Once mycelium has colonized the substrate, its harder to harbour a contam.
