Embarrassing Issue
    #6288327 -

Alright...

For the past couple of days I've been feeling kind of like I need to poop, and it hasn't really been happening (with the exception of some small narrow pieces here and there). There was some dull pain in the rectal area as well.

I went ahead and took some laxatives, got all emptied out, and it still feels the exact same.

There's sort of an achey feeling in the rectal area, and a little bit of a stabbing pain which I think is coming from the inside of the anus area.

The pain is minor enough to where I can ignore it if I am busy doing something.

Thought it might be enlarged prostate, but I have no problem peeing. There's no blood in my poop or pee..

Sorry for giving all those details. =0)

I'm only 18, I can't imagine it being something like colon cancer..

Any ideas?

Try eating light stuff for the next few days. Eat fruits and veggies. Eat beans, too, if you have them. It's good to buy a pack of them at the store and stew up a big pot because then you have beans for a week. They are pure energy and they are filled with fiber so it's no biggy for your system to handle that. Drink plenty of water.

I find that, some days, I only want to eat 1 meal. I would probably eat some fruit along with that. And honestly, I could even go without that 1 meal. It just depends on what I'm doing. Sometimes your body likes to take a break f rom digesting.

Try taking a walk and a shower and stretching if you really want to give your metabolism a good boost.

I'll go ahead and start eating more fiber...

But I don't see that helping the pain.  I mean, even after I took the laxatives I still had the pain down there..and I definitely didn't have to poop any more after that.

It's rather uncomfortable at times..especially at work (sitting at a terminal doing data entry all day).

I would say the pain is reason enough to exclude self-treatment and go see your PCP.

That said, are you on any prescription drugs?

Antacids, narcotics, anti-depressants, anti-cholinergics, histamine blockers, calcium channel blockers, MAOIs, and opiates can all cause constipation.

Do you exercise?
Are you drinking enough water?
What is your diet like?

Nope, no drugs at all except for hookah and the occasional cigarette.

I get some exercise...but probably not as much as I should.
I do drink a decent amount of water though.

Diet..ah I dunno. I don't eat much junk food...fast food now and then, my parents typically cook pretty healthy stuff.

I was going to try to make the doctor a last resort...my mom handles all the insurance and stuff. "Hey mom...my rectum hurts..I need to see the doctor."

If I eat raw cocoa I get something that sounds similar to what you're describing, except the stabbing pains can become severe, like a tooth ache or ear ache. The symptoms I had resemble IBS. Anyway, what works for me is peppermint tea, I use 4-8 tea bags. Make sure it's peppermint, not spearmint, and make sure it's hot. It stops the pain within five to ten minutes. Peppermint extract should work too.

Your problem could just be something new you're eating or drinking that your body is having a bad reaction to, or a combination of things you consumed that don't mix well. From what I understand, a combination of food or drink that both stimulates and slows down the digestive system at the same time can lead to spasms, pain, and the other symptoms you describe. You may also be developing IBS, which is unfortunately a poorly understood condition.

Considering that you have a desk job, it is no wonder that you are having some problems with digestion. All your guts stay smashed together and your body stops flowing when you sit down for so long.

You need to find a system of exercise that works for you. I'd certainly suggest getting up and walking around whenever possible. If you have a chance, go for a long walk during lunch. Learn stretches and do those. I like to hang from tree branches. There's also handstands, which rush all the blood to your torso and force to pump up to your legs. Quick and effective. Drink plenty of water. I really like tea because you can sip on it for a long time and it makes your metabolism go. Anything could work.

Sounds like you may either have a fissure in your anus, or a hemorrhoid that has either clotted, or inflamed, it will likely need an excision to remove it, if it doesn't go away on its own, due to clotting.

I really hope it's just a minor fissure, and not hemorrhoids, but since you have a desk job, and been straining to poo for a few days, I'm going to guess that's your problem.

I've been there, and done that route 2 times.  IT IS NOT FUN!!!!
I hope this isn't the problem.
I'm also not a qualified Dr.

Doesn't seem too embarassing of a question, seeing as I've had problems where I haven't torqued a cable in days, and it hurts sometimes! Eat all 3 meals on a regular basis, eat lots of fiber and fruit, and if you're still having problems, anema lol.

I just researched this for a friend, you may want to check out these articles:

http://www.drkoop.com/encyclopedia/93/373/Levator_Syndrome.html

http://www.hemorrhoid.net/levator.php

Eating more fiber and getting exercise each day would be a good idea, no matter what is causing your problem.  If it is caused by muscular tension (levator ani syndrome), you may want to add progressive relaxation and/or meditation to your daily routine, as well.

I would also recommend seeing your doctor for a check-up. If you are covered by insurance, there is no good reason to put off seeing your doctor.  Make an appointment ASAP.  Go through some tests to rule out more serious illness, then work on some lifestyle changes which will support your health in the future.

Wow, thanks for all the helpful replies everyone.

It's been a few days and it's feeling quite a bit better than it did when I posted this. Just about back to baseline.

If it starts to get worse again I'm definitely going to see a doctor.

You shouldn't need to if you follow my advice, bro.

You could also try some pushups. They are a great exercise. Make sure your nose touches the ground girly man! >=)
