GOURMET SPAWN * 1
    #6286546 -

I wonder?
Properly prepared wild rice is not the least bit STICKY.
So, I assume it would not clump.
Have to give it a go & find out.

Ya Ya, I know, it's not exactly cheap.
But, boredom leads to strange things.

Add hot water, it floats.
20 minutes later it sank.
10 minutes later, it appeared fully hydrated.

Draining.

What's the difference between quick cook wild rice and regular wild rice? and will it make a difference?

quick-cook is already partially cooked.

Just got done PC'ing a few differing sized jars:thumbup:
(60 minutes @ 16 psi)

IT SHAKES , no starch or clumps, AT ALL.

1/2 gallon tall, narrow mouth jar.

As jars cool, moisture content looks GREAT.

I will knock a few up tomorrow.

Since wild rice isn't really a rice, but a grass seed, might this work good for growing stones (mexA, tamps, atlantis#7)? (cuz rye grass seed really seems to clump easily)

That kinda shocked me.

I did the thumbnail test.
(as can be done with any wbs/grain).

Take a grain between thumb & finger.
Push thumbnail into wbs/grain.

If thumbnail cuts it deeply, or in half.
Without much pressure.

It is FULLY HYDRATED.

(sorgum common in wbs is a bit harder)

while I'm not sure the short soak times would warrant costs, I'm still interested to see your results. hope everything works.

True, about cost.

I was just rotating out old stock, from my food storage pantry.

I donate old stock to a local food bank.

Then, a wild hair struck me to do this, instead.

Once in your blood, spores whisper in your ear.

when I started to read this, I knew that it would work perfectly.  I eat rice ALOT, in fact I love wild rice, but the cost detours me from buying it.  Every time I've cooked it, I noticed it wasn't sticky at all, like regular rice is, because its not hulled.  And just like shobimono said, its not really "rice" its grass seeds.. anyways, fun to watch different things.

So the thumbnail hydration test is accurate? And can work with WBS? In that case my WBS is too dry, and I have myc growing SLOWLY. How do I rehydrate the WBS?

Thumbnail test tells you the wbs or grain has absorbed a considerable amount of moisture & the wbs or grain has softened.

Again all seed/grains differ in size, individual weight & hull thickness. So, they absorb moisture at differing rates.

For instance, millet is tiny, absorbs moisture faster than most other.
Sorghum, is about BB size, and is a hard tough seed.
It absorbs moisture slower than most others.
Rye is in the middle of the 2 above.

Thumbnail test just lets you know you are in the ballpark.

I don't simmer wbs/grains.

You can end up with a seed grain that will mash flat, with the thumbnail test, if you simmer to long.

Once you have soaked, rinsed & drained wbs/grains, then PC'ed & inoculated jars.

Best bet (if to dry)is to simply START OVER.

There is a balance, you must learn to achieve.
To dry, slow colonization, often stalls & will not colonize.

To wet, slow colonization, stalls & wet spot bacterial contamination sets in.

I soak 24, often 36 hours. Until wbs/grain is softened.

Rinse WELL, with HOT water.

Allow to drain, until outside of wbs/grain has a nearly dry appearance.
(an hour, or more)

Then jar up, & PC.
(PC times depend on load, type, make, model PC)

It is a trial & error thing, we all must go through.
Until you find a method THAT WORKS FOR YOU.

Just curious agar. As I'm sure you are doing a decent amount or grain at a time, how do you drain all of it. More than one colander? I, personally, don't have all of the time in the world to allow approximately 4 quarts (rough estimate of capacity for your every day strainer) at a time to dry for an hour a pop.

I admit that a half-hour isn't quite sufficient for optimal conditions, but it's generally all time will allow for me. This is something that has bugged me for some time. Additionally, I don't have much sink space for too many additional colanders.
