Recently someone who is not me acquired some of those large presealable spawn bags with self-healing injector site and had a few questions. She tried to prepare them and ran into problems and now has a few questions. Any help is greatly appreciated. This is how she prepared the bags: rye berries were prepared by soaking for 16hrs and then simmering (for 45 minutes) and drained in a colander until sufficiently dried (approx. 30min). Four quarts of prepared rye berries were added to each bag along with a couple of small handfuls of dry vermiculite (no excess water was seen in the bags). The bags were sealed (three times at the top to insure an airtight seal) with an impulse sealer and with the bag flaps at the top folded in (folded as they were when received in the mailed package); the seal seemed to have been air tight. They were then placed into the pressure cooker with top flap folded down so that the side with filter patch was not exposed to the air above (it wasn't below the water; not upside down). Pressure cooked for about an hour and allowed to cool for 30 min.
When the bags were removed from the pressure cooker (while still hot - in order to shake and redistribute the berries) SWIM noticed that the bags had filled with a little air and a few droplets of water were also noticed trickling down the inside of the bag. She was able to slowly remove this air out of the bag by gently wrapping the top of the bag around itself and pushing the air out although there still seems to excess moisture in the bag. SWIM inspected the bags for any small punctures but couldn't find any, she also turned the bag upside down to see if any excess moisture came out of the top where it was sealed and none did.
1) Should the bags have been sealed without folding the flaps inward? 2) Will the excess moisture be absorbed by the rye as is cools? 3) Is the filter patch allowing her to push the air out and is not caused by a small hole or puncture in the bag? 4) What is the proper way of preparing these type of bags? 5) Is there anything else that she may have done wrong? (perhaps not added enough vermiculite?) 6) How much rye should be added to each of these large bags? could more than 4 quarts be added?
Or is it possible she has done nothing wrong and the bags should be usable to inoculate with a spore syringe?
Any advice is very much appreciated. Thank you.

1. It depends if they had the proper filter for this purpose. The newer type spawn bags can be pre-sealed. The older ones aren't supposed to be. Whoever you purchased them from should be able to tell you whether or not they can be sealed prior to sterilization.
2. The bag should have moisture inside of it after sterilization. This is from steam and condensation.
3. With the newer type of filters, I noticed that you can push air out the way you mentioned. This seemed impossible to do with the older kind for some reason.
4. Mycobags Step by Step
5. Only time will tell.....
6. Refer to #4
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Did she let the pressure drop to zero naturally or remove the weight prematurely?

Thanks for all the help! SWIM got those bags that said they were sealable before putting into the PC - so that's not the problem - she wanted to know if she had to fold them (like they came) or open them up when she sealed them. She didn't remove the weight prematurely and allowed it to depressurize before she took out the bag but she is still not sure that she will use the bags; there seems to still be quite a bit of condensation in the bag.
Oh and thanks for that link - it's very helpful.
