Will this colander work for draining WBS
    #7409546 - 09/14/07 02:43 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

Hey, I've had bad luck with my first try with WBS because it isn't colonizing very fast (it took about 3 weeks) and I think it's because the WBS was too wet. So I went out and bought a colander (before I used house screen laid in the bath tub, I think it didn't work well cuz there was no where for the water to drain to). What do you all think?

Also on a side note, how do I go about breaking up the ones that are colonized? Do I use a fork or do I need to sterilize it, or shud I just put on rubber gloves and break it up by hand (it wont come out of the jar without breaking it up some).

WBS should drain really nice with the colander picutured above. Hell, I wish I had it! Mine is halve the size of that. The reason it's probably hard to break up is because it's been sooo long to colonization. Did you shake the shit out of them when they were about 25% colonized or did you just wait the full 3 weeks to let them naturally colonize. Sounds like you just left them to colonized on their own. I shook the shit out of my jars last night. I inoculated them a week ago and they were ready to shake yesterday. Right now you can see MASSIVE recolonization. They'll be ready in about 3 to 4 days. If they are truly fully colonized jars then I don't think sticking a sterilized fork would be bad. You've come this far, so you know how important being clean, sterile, fast, and efficient is. Now go git to work!

That's a nice colander. The only ones I wouldn't suggest (though they still work okay) are either ones with big holes that the WBS will fall through, or ones that only drain at the bottom, which causes uneven drainage and makes for more stirring on your part during the drainage time.

I don't think that shaking at 25% is totally necessary, and I like to avoid it. It might earn you a day, but I've seen it fuck up my moisture balance, probably due to the sheer amount of agitation it sometimes takes to break up colonized spawn squishing some moisture out of the grains and leading to a little puddle problem.

Don't use a fork to get it out at the end. Bash it against an inflated bike tire, or an upholstered armchair, or something soft but very firm. It will take a minute sometimes, but it will break up. I have used my knee, and it does the trick, but it's not exactly comfortable.

on topic, looks fine... as mentioned, as long as the holes aren't too big.

paint strainers work well if you can't find a colander like that... you can usually use them a few times until they rip, but it only costs like $3 for two of them.. plus, they hold more and are easier to clean up than a colander, IMO.. never end up w/ a drain full of grain.

just set it on an oven rack or something to elevate it and turn it over once during draining.

yos-

I just bought that exact same colander. I used wbs and it went by fine. You'll get a few seeds going through, but that's it. Mostly canary seeds too.

The extensible handles totally sold me.

Oh, and if I remember right, you can put roughly 12 pints of soaked seed in it. If that helps you prepare.

Lol you asshole. Anyway, I read about people breakin their jars bashing them against the tire. I will try to agitate enough to break up the seeds. And yes I shook them at 25%, then again at like 50%, they do shoot back pretty fast. I just wanna make sure I do everything right, I think this monotub I'm working on will be a success. I'm just worried theyre gonna get contamed if I stick a fork in there.

edit: i was just kidding about the asshole thing

Okay so I just shook it up again. It looks a lot less white... I'm pretty surprised. The whole jar was white with a hint of the seeds seeing through. Now its all normal color again except each of the seeds has little tiny white parts on it. Is it ready to roll?

I have the same colander. Got mine at Lowe's. Use it for grain all the time without any problems. I hope you got a better price at Walmart than I did at Lowe's, I think I payed like $18 for mine.
