What is experienced in meditation?
    #6280286 -

I ask this because I have recently started meditating in the traditional sense.  But I'm not new to clearing the ongoing dialogue in my mind, or practicing karmic yoga or the consecrated action, etc.  But the actual state of being still and just clearing the mind and letting go is new to me.

Here is what I've experienced in the past few weeks I've been meditating, maybe someone can corroborate this type of experience.  I'm still, and I finally surrender, stop trying to manipulate the experience, keep my mind from wandering or even thinking at all.  Then I get this "inner body or energy" type thing happening where I feel like I'm wobbling back and forth, but on the inside.  My perception of my body will get wierd, like I could feel as if my hands were right in my face, even though they are in my lap, or even before that they are behind my head.  My entire world feels warped like that.  Then the movement of energy gets more and more intense and violent moving back and forth until finally I feel like I"m just spinning to the right in circles.  All the while, even though I'm not anxious about it, my heart starts racing and my breathing becomes more shallow and quicker.  That gets faster and the spinning does too and then it's like I break through.  It just stops and melts away.  There is no more warped body, energy movement, or anything.  Nothing, no more body, no more surroundings, anxiety, heart beating, etc.  I'm just at peace and experiencing nothing but my consciousness...being.  And it's the greatest feeling there is, it's a complete freedom from anxiety and body feelings, whatever.  I feel like I could stay there forever, and I'd love to.

I dont' always make it that far, and its the times when I want to, because its so great, that I don't, for the obvious reasons.  But I wonder, is there a step even further than that?  Is there more i've yet to experience, a deeper sense of peace?

Can anybody say they've experienced that energy movement stuff?  That's mainly what I'm asking, and also I'd like others to tell their stories of strange things like that that occur.  I have no clue what's normal, and I doubt that we all even experience the same thing, but then again I figure there are some similiarities.  Please share!

  Thanks for your time and effort.  I appreciate it.

You a trippy dude. Very cool. Now I suggest you don't go any further in this thread. Let it happen. Don't look to others for what you will expect to find and you might just surprise yourself and go further then you "should".

I would call this a phenomenal meditation report
with a phenomenal tranquility.
the ride you take on your way to tranquility can be gentler or more energy filled, but all meditations lead to tranquility.
if you take it further you get into insight meditation which requires the base of tranquility.

there are many siddhis and fascinating phenomena that can be explored, psychic heat and such. (I have only got into some of them, and will probably not continue seeking them as that pursuit is not in synch with my life).

the phenomena are unlimited and available in many directions.

after tranquility, however begins insight, regardless how tranquility is attained.

i.e.

you can go for more energy effects and interesting phenomena (the psychic carnival), or you can transcend the fascination with psychic phenomena (and the associated costs to explore it), and begin the consolidation of your path through insight based upon the tranquility you have access to via meditation.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I fully understand your warning.  I think I will be able to not project expectations into the experience though (I hope).

I know what you are saying about the psychic circus.  I've had a good 5 or 6 premonition type events in the past few months that are undeniable as psychic phenomena, but at the same time, I have chosen not to be derailed by them.  I don't want to get distracted by them, because I know that can lead into desires for using them for personal gain or whatever.  That's not my bag, I'm here for the long run, not to get excited because I've had a glimpse and become content or whatever people may do.  It was either Castenada or Ram Dass that taught me that (maybe both?)

You are saying "insight" comes next, then.  Is this the kind of thing where I would be able to do some self-analyzing, and "heal" some psychological issues?  I may be trailing off on some tangent, but this seems almost shamanic.  Would you care to go into any more detail about this part?

Thanks for your replies, both of you

Yessum. I can relate to the energy body movement stuff. Feeling like your legs are rising up over your head when they're not, feeling intense rushes with G forces, cartwheels like how bed spins move. Its awesomely fun, usually starts out with a sort of weightless/giddy feeling and is always associated with some sort of "understanding breakthrough" when it happened. I was always also sober in case people think its a drug related phenomenon.

I'm not sure why it happens or whats going on, on the energetic level. Just replied to let you know that you aren't alone in it and I am aware of a handful of others who experienced that sort of movement while sitting still.

I suspect many more have that activity going on and just aren't in a zone where they are hypersensitive enough to feel the subtle bodies. In other words, I think its a more normal occurrence then people are aware of.

If I had to guess now, you mentioned that it felt like a break through and I would get it just after epiphany type break throughs. So I am thinking, maybe the movement has to do with some sort of energy body inter dimensional travel taking consciousness from one place to another that it was once blocked from. If it had been blocked/backed up energy, its bound to come bursting forth with a lot more force and maybe thats why it is easier to feel.

I can't wait for science to understand the quantum field better and start explaining more of this stuff. Until then, enjoy the ride and like others say, keep letting go and see where it takes you.

Heeeeeeey, I just thought of something. Did this happen recently? There was a gateway opening coming up to 11/11  and this one was INTENSE. My daughter couldn't fall asleep at night for days and I couldn't stay awake. A handful of times when I felt like passing out in the middle of the day, I would feel my legs floating up on me and like I was heavily sedated on morphine.

Sensitives will start feeling effects a few weeks prior to the opening of cosmic dimensional gateways/portals. If you did within the last two weeks, then, I'm feeling stronger about my guess that it does have to do with some sort of subtle body inter dimensional travel and going through otherwise closed gates.

It would be akin to being in that ball Jodie Foster was in , in the movie Contact. It shot her this way and that going through worm holes at great speeds with quick stops and starts and spins and whirls and for a time, things were weightless inside of it. All the while from the outside, the ball didn't go anywhere.

That's an analogy for what its like to have the physical body still, yet, the energy body inside of it is moving at sometimes, intense speeds and in physically impossible maneuvers, as well as getting this sense of weightlessness.

Oh well, sorry if this is too out there for S&P. I felt like answering since he was looking for someone to relate too his experience.

What do you do to "return" from that peaceful state?
Where do you "return" to?

thats pretty cool! i've had quite intense moments of meditation before! sounds familiar!

yea "stop trying to manipulate the experienec" otherwise it will go away!
mirror meditation is a good example of this working... try staring at the mirror and just looking.. and finally stillign your mind... you will begin to hallucinate ... your face will change shape, mold, etc... and if u try and make out or manipulate whats going on ... it will just disappear... its cool :P

yes, the re-connecting with what has been severed. this is like healing (of attitude), and is a spontaneous, self evident, ongoing process, involving transcendence of preconceived notions. I am sure I am saying too much about it as is, but if you use this information to keep your process open then there is no harm in it.

anyway, the energy stuff is a lot like the metaphor of angels fighting, and I can see why one may look for external references, even astrological correspondences.

what each person meets up with on their path is very individual, and while it is private, it intensifies the links we have with one another.

There are plenty of kinds of meditation, like has already been said... personally I aim for a state of non-local timelessness, i.e. infinity. It's a matter of simultaneous oneness and difference, because my body still exists, so I'm local and time-bound while non-local and timeless. First I center myself conventionally in the Now, and then I proceed to non-local timeless Nothing.. you can only reach Nothing *through* the Now, not in circumventing it or anything. I also make sure to believe that my efforts will succeed, like Yoda in Star Wars, you do or do not, there is no try.. and I don't force it, but I let it happen, and I just realize that it is happening, and it happens.

If I was to offer advice, I would say that you should work on making your state of mind in meditation less, well, desireable. When you realize the neutrality of your state, that you are your own god, then you don't cling to it or want it to always be like that, because you realize that's how it really always is deep down, and then you can start carrying it over into 'sobriety'. Also as you begin to curb your motions towards neutrality, towards just being without 'caring', then you start to learn how you are emotionally over-attached to your ego. How should I put this... if you desire, then you do not have, for you want, and what you want you do not have. It's a matter of realizing that you are only ever holding your own self back, and that the natural state of existence is blissful.

If you care about bliss too much then it's like you become attached to it in an unhealthy way... this results from ignorance, that you don't realize you are immortal, that you fear losing the state, which is impossible unless you cause yourself to temporarily forget it. You have to appreciate the state while taming your attachment to it, because you are already attached impeccably, because that state is truly you. But if you fear, if you doubt yourself, thinking you can lose it, then you will. The feeling itself *is* desire, the passion of incredulity itself, the power of Nothing... when your desire is content with simply being then you don't seek but rather you have. Then you act in the world not accordingly to needing but rather to disciplined and responsible wanting.

Yeah, I know these things, but still have to realize them. The intellectual knowing versus the experiential realization... Thanks for the reminder, definitely something I needed to hear.

I have a couple more questions if anybody would like to give me their opinions.

Recently I listened to the Adyashanti talks someone uploaded here, and he mentioned that he felt it wasn't important what position we meditate in (as long as we aren't kicked back with a kool-aide). Do you think it is important? I understand it plays a large role in the chakras, which I don't know a whole lot about yet.

Also, what stretches would help me be able to get into the full lotus position for meditation? I would imagine the butterfly stretch would help. I have searched for this info on the net and can't find anything.

Thanks again

Re: What is experienced in meditation? [Re: jonathanseagull]
    #6285815 -

for me position relates in two ways

1. the ride (which varies in quality but is not critical to the progress you make) i.e. rough camel progress, smooth caldiac progress, leaping antelope, or incremental worm advances.
I do a lot of lying down and non lotus posture for my own purpose of re-connection (i am s worm).

2. the projection or expresion of the pose. the mudra idea here relates a lot. when you sit lotus, you represent meditation in all languages, and to all beings including yourself, so lotus is itself a meme, a metaphor, a message, and a link to all engrams that cue enlightenment related ideas.

as to stretching excercises, approach them with confidence and regularity and you will get the gain with the pain.

The quieting of the noise in the head.

--------------------

Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience.
It isn't more complicated than that.
It is opening to or recieving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is,
without either clinging to it or rejecting it.

Depends what method of meditation. But for any kind of formal sitting practice keeping ones back straight is essential.
