This is a really interesting topic guys. I've got a question though.

I read in one of the above posts that the market is flooded and I imagine it would be.

I'm an artist -- writer, painter, illustrator -- still in training mind you, but I've pretty much figured out my path to get to the level where I want and, hopefully, have some success.

The thing is I know how much hard work it will take. 1% inspiration 99% perspiration sort of thing.

Is the market more favorable to people who truly work their asses off and sacrifice so much of themselves for their artistry, or less rewarding and stagnant. So my question would be can you make it to the top based on hard work and dedication (with talent of course) alone?

sadly, eligal is right. Take for instance that I am running sound right now for two brand new recording artists... maybe you will recognize the names: Charles kelly and Josh Hoge... the younger brothers of Will Hoge and Josh Kelly.
Now, while they are talented and have great voices, they didnt make it based solely on their talent but mainly because they knew people who could help them, and their name, make some money.

The really weird thing about "fame" industries, is that television doesnt portray any reality of any part of it... even the reality television shows which claim to do so.

Which is why so many fucktards flock to places like L.A., Nashville, and NYC with guitar in hand and unabashed optimism and faith in their ability to "make it".... then once they have sacrificed everything for their art, the reality of the situation hits them in the face like a brick wall.
Compunding the issue is the half percent of those people who actually make it, and then contribute it (falsly) to their dogged determination and faith in their music, when in actuality, it was a lucky break, and perfect timing and knowing a few people.

Outside of really amazing, genuine, and unique ability, it takes networking, image, handshakes, fake smiles, and lots of "supporting" other people in your field.

After 6-7 years dealing with "artists", i have found that any art is marketable and profitable, as long as it is fed properly to society. Llisten to an album long enough and you will find that you like it. Conditioned aesthetic appreciation is the cornerstone of pop art. Slap a big enough price tag on a painted canvas and someone will buy it. Play a song 5 times an hour on a raidio station and people will start humming it and liking it.

The question isnt "what is and isnt art?", but "how can we make people pay for this?". Put enough money and people and energy into it, and it "make it".

well, dont become completely discouraged. It isnt hopeless. i wasnt trying to break anyones hopes and dreams, but merely give my perception of reality to the starry-eyed optimists.
You can meet people, and it is hard work. For many songwriters, it becomes more their job to go out to bars and open mic nights every single night..... more so than writing songs.
