Has anyone tried a suspended casing...no container, in a terranium. My thought was that if all sides are exposed that would allow for not only more oxygen exposure and less problems with sitting in the bottom in CO2 but also it would provide 3 times as much surface for fruitings. I figure if I wrap the casing in nylon screen before colonization it would grow around the screen. I've heard of this being used to remove the casing from a container in order to put more substrate on the bottom. I could then suspend the casing by the nylon and it would also hold all of the casing together I'd love to hear any Thoughts? and/or Problems? "It's all about the music"

sounds like a great idea! maybe you could fashion some type of thin support system inside of your mesh, i would think the casing would be broken up when hanging with a medium or larger casing unless you hung it from quite a few places. maybe a very thin and sturdy type of plastic would be cool.

What if you skip the casing all together? Empty the substrate into the foot of a nylon stocking and hang it from the top of the terrarium. Maybe cut some slits into the stocking if needed. I would probably also tie the the stocking in a knot at the top of the substrate ball so there isn't room for mushies to grow inside the stocking. My friend might have to try this and see how it works. You would have a lot more surface area for the fruit to grow from and a lot more air exchange as well.

This seems like a strait forward idea. Has anyone done anything like this before?

Interesting ideas! How about making something like a dessicant box, but without the dessicant? Put the cakes/substrate on it, and it could fruit from all sides....

I had a similar thought; was thinking you could build a big poor man terrarium with a big water cooler water bottle. Put a little shelf up in the top and the co2 would go down to the bottom and moisture would float up to the top.

The time is nearing to test out my casing tek. If anyone has done any experiments with this since something got posted last be sure and let us all know. Problems successes etc. I'll post pictures as soon as my set up is on it's way.

THis is how alot of Oyster and Shitake mushroom home growers have things setup. I've seen pics (and i'll try to find them) where they do take a big piece of screen or similar material, and roll it up, and make a 5 foot tube. Then they take their colonized substrate, and pour it into the tube and wait for it to start pinning. These were done in rather large rooms, sealed and environmentally controlled.
the results were pretty good.
actually, here's ONE link i just found. THose "BLOCKS" of substrate are hanging.
