This page explains it
http://www.1sks.com/store/emerson-commander.html

as
"The Wave "crest", shown here, catches the pocket of your pants on the way out of it's clipped position. This engages the blade to deploy"

at which point you finish opening the blade with your fingers.

i have a couple knives made by kershaw that have this 'speed safe' system. it's pretty much the fast knife i've had to open. just the lightest touch of your finger, especially on the 'chive' model and the blade flys out like lightning

i'm gonna check out this emerson knife though

Here is a spyderco delica wave. The pics show how it works.

I have a Kershaw Scallion which is one size larger than the chive. It is an awesome knive. It sells at wal mart for $35 or so. I found a video on you tube.

How do you like the Blur? I had my eyes on one. I also recently purchased a benchmade mini-griptilian. It isn't an assisted opener but I like it just the same. The benchmade AXIS lock is awesome. I can open or close the blade with one hand while never actually touching the blade. You just hold the lock open and flick your wrist to open or close. It's nice for camping and such.

(actual size)

Here is a good forum on knives.

It actually does work as a bottle opener. I was reading about it in a thread and that is what most people were excited about.

i really like that griptillian, and most benchmades for that matter, i wanted to get one of those too. i like the tactical blur, i got the tanto blade and it really is a fierce looking and feeling blade. the grip is nice and rough, kind of like a crystalline 80 grit sandpaper feel..reminds me of good quality, brand new grip tape. i don't think it would have any problem being shoved through someone's car door or tire or coconut...whatever you want, haha. but i use it less than the others. simply cuz it's a a little big for everyday carrying. not really big actually, i'm just used to this little chive i think. if i were going hiking, camping or out on a boat, or somewhere outdoorsy, i'd be carrying it. it's actually sitting next to my alarm clock by my bed.

i just held it up to that image of the benchmade, and it's just about the same size. great knife.
