the swedge (upper edge) isnt meant to be sharp. even if you buy an expensive or older bowie its not gonna be sharp enough to cut you unless an end user sharpened it on their own
mainly cause it doesnt need to be, and it would make the knife illegal to carry outdoors in some countries, including the US, cause it constitutes a "double edge" and they think that means it can only be used for violence
bow·ie knife ˈbo͞oē,ˈbōē/ noun a long knife with a blade double-edged at the point. https://www.google.com/search?hl=en-US&ie=UTF-8&source=android-browser&q=bowie+knife+define&gws_rd=ssl Knife laws are regulated by the state and not the feds. So double edged blades ARE legal in some states. Namely Oregon.
you may be right about the double edge laws, im not really read up im just going by what ive read. i guess there are a few states that allow it, but most don't. and if you kill someone with a double edged knife, even in self defense, your gonna get charged with something
but i can pretty much garuntee most bowies aren't gonna have sharpened swedges.
cold steel makes several 150-300$ bowies, all swedges unsharpened
chris reeve makes several bowies, again, no sharp swedges
KA-BAR makes several bowies, none with sharpened swedges. even the ones the military would issue don't
even your knife you posted for example, take a look at these photo from a different angle
this is an even better picture, but its huge so im just posting a link : http://www.knife-depot.com/images/product/c6/390934.jpg
the swedge is clearly unsharpened, whereas you can see the beveled cutting edge on the front
i could go on with different companies, but those are 3 well known ones, plus your own knife. not saying there arent any bowies out there with sharpened swedges, but they really arent made like that and people just put em on themselves
i go to knife shows (actually gun shows, but people bring lots of knives too) and ive seen a fuckton of bowies and knives in general. approximately very very few had sharp swedges, and the ones that did werent even bowies
im not trying to be a dick, im just passionate about knives

Yeah Bowies are cool and definitely only for hunting. Mine is a Buck knife. Generally buck knifes are just replica bowie knifes. Ive tried to give it my own edge on a number of other blades but it greaty comprimises the integrity of the blade. They are definately a precision peice of work. Double edged anything really makes it tricky to stich a person back up. Infact its quite grusome. The worst of the worst is the 3 sided trench knifes of world war one. this one pictured I think is your standard 2 edged. But WW1 3 sided trench knifes could look like that or mounted and very long bayonet. Its blade was the shape of a pyramid. Once stabbed with this weapon, it leaves a gaping hole, bigger than a bullet wound, impossible to stich. Impossible. You will bleed out.
It cuts a perfect circle right into ya with no effort.
They have "rules" for war now. Kinda ironic. I wanna kill you but not like this. They were banned in the Genova convention after ww1 along with chemical warfare.
these are most definitely the ones. Though they are laying on their 3rd side. I dont believe any company in the world even manufactures replicas.. but I havent looked into that. http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/uploads//monthly_03_2014/post-66-0-31124400-1396138205.jpg

I remeber watching that with my grandfather. I shit you not. Is was the first time I saw his. He bought it at a gun swap or gun show in Oregon. It had some serious weight too it. Easily 4 or 5 lbs. It felt like holding a little more than a quarter gallon of water. His didnt have the spike knuckes but they were the hexongonic shaped knuckles. Ima have to get some damn pics.
Great man. Lots of wisdom taught me everything I know about outdoorsn.. except mushrooms haha

Here's a couple of my fav's
-------------------- Here's what we can do to change the world right now, to a better ride. Take all the money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead, spend it feeding, clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over , not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace. ~Bill Hicks~ Looking to build up a print library
