Top Ten indications that you’re over-obsessed with religion
    #6216588 -

From this week's commentary:

Top Ten indications that you’re over-obsessed with religion

#10 – You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.

#9 – You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that humans were created from dirt.

#8 – You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.

#7 – Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the male first-born babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" – including women, children, and trees.

#6 – You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods consorting with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.

#5 – You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of the Earth (4.55 billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is about a couple of generations old.

#4 – You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs – though excluding those in all rival sects – will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering, and yet you consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."

#3 – While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor “speaking in tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" your choice of religions to be the correct one.

#2 – You define .01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers, and consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% failure was simply the will of God.

#1 – You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history – but you still call yourself a Christian.

Where is the mockery?  It's all accurate...

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Religion is not a spiritual issue. This is represented by the fact that one forum has "Spirituality" in it and the other has "Religion". I'm not claiming that poking fun or mocking another's beliefs should be allowed in this forum, but I think threads pertaining to religion, for the most part, should be here. "Skeptic vs. believer style debates" pertaining to religion have not occured much at all in P&S for quite some time because we have transcended these things and are onto deeper matters (this is the trend that I have observed).

Well said.

Many "Christians" IMO blindly follow the teachings of their preacher/pastor.....not necessarily the teachings of Jesus.

Unfortunately, all true. However, it is a venting against non-universalist Christians in particular, not against "religion." It seems to me that the multitudes who 'say' they are Christians, do so from some very shallow senses of identity. I realize that this sounds immensely judgemental, so allow me to clarify.

There are a majority of 'Feeling' type people over 'Thinking' type people in the general population. Among the Feeling types, there is a much smaller subset of individuals whose feelings touch deep and abiding values like the centrally important Compassion. A much larger number of people seem to be entirely fickle and live in the rapidly changing surface emotions that derive not from deep values, but from simple perception. Child playing with puppy brings a smile, adolescent wearing black clothes and chains brings a frown, a wink from a stranger brings a jolt of lust and an immediate censoring blush, etc. These multitudes watch a Passion Play about Jesus, a Cecil B. DeMille movie about the Exodus and perceiving the obviousness of those situations, are moved emotionally. That is, they experience a slightly deeper level of feeling than their usual sensory perception and shallow emotional responses permit. Bang! They become intellectually convinced by the shift to deeper feelings, then believe that they've been personally sought by God and moved by the Holy Spirit and now they are fundamentalist Christians, Orthodox Jews, or fanatical Muslims. Whichever.

Now, Thinking types do not fare much better. Even though a minority relative to Feeling types, too many have thought themselves out of their Feeling and Intuitive functions and have become intellectuals and atheists in the process. Bill Maher is a good example of an astute mind when focused on political processes, but completely undeveloped, rebellious and childish in his comments on God or Intelligent Design.

All Christians do not believe that their particular doctrine is salvific. Some of us Know that what is salvific and enlightening lies far deeper than intellectually-held ideas about THAT which is actually salvific. Doctrine for me, deriving from elaborations on Biblical writ, amount to mere lifestyle differences. Want to connect with no dancing, or no plaiting of hair, or public worship on Saturdays instead of Sundays? All these and lots more can be gleaned from scriptures. Pre-Vatican Two forbade Catholics from receiving communion in non-Catholic churches. Post-Vatican Two said, in a spirit of ecumenism, well, it's OK, but don't make a habit of it! What, before the ruling you went to Purgatory and after the ruling you didn't go to Purgatory? What about Purgatory itself? Protestant Christians don't even recognize it as a metaphysical possibility? Doctrines divide and destroy. Only the Truth sets us free - the Truth as universally agreed upon that the Ultimate Reality and Its immanence in human beinghood and action is characterized soley by Compassion, whether Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Sikh, Hindu, Muslim or by whatever identifiable body of adherents of Truth one wants to name.

Peace.
