Mycelium Death
    #6209887 -

at what temp does mycelium actually die? ive read that it dies at 59 degrees and lower but a few people have said they found copes in 50 degree weather. if the mycelium does die how long does it take for it to grow again? how long would it take to produce mushrooms after death? if it helps i live in south texas.

I assume you are asking about the low extreme of which mycellium can thrive? Hmmm, not too sure, however, keep in mind- different species have different temperature tolerances.

also keep in mind that there is a difference between the range in which the mycellia will survive and the range in which it will fruit. the mycellia of must mushrooms are perenial, and a given colony will survive through the weather extremes of it's native climate.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Yes, good point. An alleged "strain" from Canada lets say, of Psilocybe cubensis would probably maintain poorly if fruited outdoors in Texas.

im a little slow so would it be pointless for me to hunt in the next week? its dropped below 60 degrees for the past few days but will be in the 80's from here on for about a week.

might aswell try. IME with northern Psilocybes: when temps drop too low for fruiting for only a few days [without prolonged freezing] and then rise again, it tends to delay the next fruiting by a few days but that's it. i have little experience with semitropical mushrooms but i would immagine this to be true down south also, but on a warmer temp scale. just some quasi-educated speculation on my part but you might aswerll get out there within a few days of your upcomming warm up and try.

Keep in mind as well, the dung is composting due to bacteria and fungus growth, which will in turn keep it a little warmer, as well as the insulation caused by the dung itself. Im saying only a few degrees though.

Basically, YESSUP has been finding plenty of mushrooms in that area, if you know where to look, you could have a chance.

I have seen accounts of someone in Kansas finding Cubes fruiting with snow on the ground, right next to the Cubes (fruiting in full force from a large manure pile with some snow on top of it). So those shrooms (known as a warm weather species) will survive some colder temps than one would think.

Here in my part of Florida (during winter) it will only frost maybe once or twice a year, and the Cubes and Copes both survive and grow during the colder parts of our winter. Its surprising to find them in cold weather but these two shrooms seem to actually tolerate it.
