when to transplant baby cacti?? - Peruvian torch
    #617083 - 04/24/02 05:11 AM (21 years, 11 months ago)

When should you transplant baby cacti? There is a picture of some of the baby cacti below (Peruvian torch). Note: Only 8 out of 100 seeds have germinated so far after 4 weeks.

Trichocereus peruvianus picture:

Did you try bottem heat to increase germination? If not, try putting a heating pad wrapped in a towl, on low, on a timer under the pan. Don't let it get too hot. A few hours on a few hours off should do. You might be able to get a few more plants out of there.

I have grown out some assorted cacti from seed and ended transplating them after about eight months. The few that I transplanted early than that ended up dead. I have just started some peruvian torch and trichocereus brigdesii. Can't wait for them to sprout.

I think the low germination was caused by some of the following.

- inconsistent temperature (heat was provided from a computer monitor, which was only on in the evenings) room temp has been between 19 C and 24 C.

- low light source (The cacti have been moved recently to a lighter spot, but there is no bottom heat!)

- overly safe watering to prevent rot???, though I think I got it just right.

I will try to find some way of providing bottom heat in its new location, however I would not have the space for 100 cacti anyway.

Update:

The 9th baby has germinated...

Is 4 - 5 weeks a normal length of time for germination?

I have bought a heated propagator for them in B&Q, for only 10 pounds. I noticed they had heating cable, which is placed directly in the soil and is attached to a thermostat, but it was very expensive. Future investment perhaps....!

Here is a picture or three?..

No personal experience, but I've read on cactus cultivation sites that some species can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 4 months to germinate. So I'd say you're probably still in the "everything's normal" window.

Very nice, when I get my mushrooms out of my heated propagator I'm going to plant all my cactus seeds (I've got several different kinds). I also thought the heating pad at B&Q was too expensive at the moment (although it does have a thermostat, so could be useful in future), I ended up getting the large heated propagator.

My camera should finally come tomorrow, I'll show you how bi they'll be after a year (not very lol). Its in the second or third year thye'll grow very very fast.

Oh yeah, and you can transplant them whenever after about 5 months, but the longer you keep them there the better, juts depends if you need to put anything else in the propagator.

psilocybe cubensis -- That's a very interesting picture, you don't often see pics including the roots, very good for future reference.

Thanks for the advice and the words of wisdom everyone
