Hi I just received an 8 cm peruvian torch and I want to know what's the best way to place it in the soil, how much water, and the estimated time it gets roots. Also I want to know how much fertilizer is ok to give and the amount of water. Thanks

Don't water or fertilize it at all until it grows roots. Not a drop!
And don't fertilize until the growth really starts showing, and it is in an active season. Once the roots are established you can go a bit nuts in the summer, if you're careful.
Do a search on proper soil. Sacredcactus.com has a good idea. Don't just use normal cactus soil. Generally, you want a sandy soil that drains well, with a buffered ph.
Just wait, they work like magic. And if you bought your 'peruvianus' from a site in the US or canada (anywhere but where they grow naturally, actually), do a search on my posts for peruvianus and read the rants. I've done it too many times to respectably repeat.
If that's the case, and your goal is having an active cactus, I highly suggest ordering some bridgesii, pachanoi, or macrogonus (and others) for your collection from different sources, get a little variability, as genetically weak cacti can be common.

Ok, thanks I didn't made the order from a US site, I've ordered it from azarius and I intend to order some more if everything goes ok. Umm.... and two more questions: firs is that the part where cactus have been cut is kind of dry. should I make one more fresh cutting before putting it into soil? And second, after how much time will it grow roots, how can I tell, so I can water it?

"Do not water for 1 or 2 weeks after potting. Let the section get used to the dirt and begin to search for water on its own by budding roots. Ribs will suck inward and become thin as the specimen uses up its internal resources, when the ribs begin to fatten up you know you have a good root system. "
I usually just give it a month. These things pop out roots like crazy, even out of the sides if they aren't planted.
Normally, I'd suggest that a 'smart shop' cactus is a cuzcoensis. Not so sure about whats in the picture here though: http://azarius.net/images/tmp/azarius.net_trperuvianusgroep.jpg maybe someone else can help. It looks a little like 2 pedro next to a macrogonus. Got any pictures of your cactus? Hopefully it is indeed a macrogonus, you'd be quite lucky.
Oh, and you want the base to be dry when you plant it. Less chance for infections. If it were a fresh cut, I'd suggest to leave it out until it heals. I find that if you leave it unplanted long enough, lots of little root buds pop out.

8 " are small and take years to mate with the conditions if they even like them. Place it callloused end on sandy loose soil where it wont get water for years and let it extend itself into the earth by desire alone. Otherwise it will rot.

Not true. You're suggesting to wait years before watering? No way.

It will rot very easily, if not cared for. Shouldnt take a year to get situated, but a few months wouldnt suprise me at all.

You can give it some moisture after 6 weeks without hurting it. If it's little enough water that it is dry by the end of the day, there's nothing to worry about. It depends on how much heat and/or sunlight they're getting. Water in the morning.

With light and heat there should be no problem cause I have a good place to put it where it can get both. Today I'm going to buy a pot and soil for the cactus. My question is about how many centimeters should I place it in the soil?

I got 16 cm T. peruvianus cutting from Azarius 3 months ago and it was fat and solid as rock. It rooted in few weeks (2-4), and now is fully rooted just hasn't started to grow yet, but it is to early really. I sprinkled it with water every day since I potted it and recently started to water it a little... Hope it is some good and bitter strain...

do *you* have a picture then?
If it's rooted, it just needs some heat and light and it should start taking off soon.

Yeah, but don't get 'cactus soil' most stores stock. It low ph, and not aerated or quick draining enough. Mix some non-peat based compost, perlite, and some sand.

In absence of a decent camera here are some bad images:

It has 9 ribs at the lower half and 7 ribs in the upper part. It sticks 13.5 cm above the ground, 2.5 cm is in the ground, so whole cutting is about 16 cm long. It was wrapped in that stress-relieving plastic foil with air bubbles (plop! snap!) and than rolled in fat cardboard so it was completely safe. However, spines are mostly removed so I cannt tell much about their original look. Some areoles look as it was Bridgesii and some have dominating central spine.

Honestly what is the point in growing them? You can either go on eBay and buy huge Peruvian torches for dirt or you can buy Peruvian torch powder from X source imported to the USA. If you want the X source im me. Peace

I also bought Peruvian Torch from Azarius. Not plants, but seeds. They don?t seem to have very long spines. May be they are the short spined Peruvianus. http://img153.imageshack.us/my.php?image=00000063sf.jpg http://img204.imageshack.us/my.php?image=00003133dy.jpg
A picture of what is supposed to be a Pachanoi. It has longer spines than the Peruvianus. http://img204.imageshack.us/my.php?image=00003099rz.jpg
