When using grass seed does it matter if it's 80% rye grass seed and 20% kentucky blue grass? That's the highest content of rye seed that my friend can find.

What you are looking for is a loose root system, rye grass has that. Not sure about blue grass. If the grass has a tight root system the mushies have a hard time growing in and thru it. Mushroom sites on the web have rye grass seeds for sale. It take a very little seed for a bed or colony. I have read that Pharis (spell'g) grass and pet grass will work also, but have not used them myself. Good growing, Treering

Pardon my confusion, but dont you acutally use the seed as the substrate? Root structure? I didnt think you sprouted it and let it get green. ??? Ciao -BeautifulDay

Im' sorry, My foaf thought he/she was using it for mulch, ( he/she did say "Grass Seed"). Thats what my foaf use's with hardwood leaves for mulch, outdoor growing. The rye grass seed sprouts and acts as a terrium over the top and the roots oxygeniate the substrate that the mushies grow in. If you want substrate, you use rye berries. Found at the health food store. My foaf question's if mushies will grow on Rye Grass seed, most seed has been treated with chemicals. Mushies may not like to growing "ON" some of those chemicals. Good luck, Treering

Well my friend, the seed is used as a sub. mostly for the p mexicana, and tampanensis.. 2:1 ratio. Any seed mix worked fine so far. I have not worried about the chemicals. Same with rice, straw, millet....it has never been a problem yet. It is a legitimate concern though. Great to use as a "mulch" outdoors too!!!
