Grass Seed Questions (Cubs and Pan Cyans)
    #503714 - 12/28/01 10:52 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

Has anyone attempted to grow Ps. Cubensis out on rye grass seed? Say rye grass cased with 50/50+, no spawning or anything. Yield? More desired than the PF Tek?

Also, I know Pan Cyan can be fruited on rye with fruitbodies too small to print. But can fruitbodies be had off of plain rye grass seed?

I don't know about pure rye grass seed? But if you are having trouble finding fresh manure, just hit K-mart, or home depot and get some dehydrated manure. It is better then composted manure from the store. No need for leaching!!!
Just mix it up with :
1 cup manure
1/4 cup rye grass seed
1/4 cup perlite
moisten to field capacity.
Place 2 cups of mixture in 1 quart jar, pressure cook for at least 1 hour at 15 p.s.i.
They probably fruit on ryegrass seed, but they can't get much bigger then on rye grain, and they are pretty small. Hundreds of tiny shrooms. Biggest ones were about 2 1/2 inch tall, and under a 1/4 inch cap. Most way under a quarter inch. Go with manure based or straw. Manure is easier to keep contaminants off of though. But they do sell mini bales of straw, pre-cut and pretty clean, at walmart in the crafts section for three bucks. I got no place to store a full bale. LOL
They will probably grow on all the substartes cubensis grows on. The mexicana and tampanensis grew on rye grain and rye grass seed. They both also grew on a mixture of manure and ryegrass seed!!!
I think all of these subtropical mushrooms will eat a variety of substrates. I think the smaller size is do to the selective nature of mushroom feeding. It utilizes only a portion of any substrate it is feeding on, and some of these, like the Copelandia's, can only utilize a very small portion of straight rye. Hence the small size. They also exhibited a drastic Darkining of the fruitbodies at maturity. Not necessarily a bluing, which was also present in a high degree, but a blackening. Someone here suggested the theory of phosphorous deficiency, and this might be very accurate. I don't know if it was directly related to a lack of phosphorous in the rye, an inability to utilize the substrate efficiently, or if my lack of PH adjustment had locked up certain nutrients. I never really adjust PH for cubensis, and I have not for COP.'s, but maybe it is more critical, when growing on OFF TYPE substrates.
It seems logical. If the mushroom is selectively feeding off a deficient nutrient base, and the PH is off, further inhibiting nutrient availability. You could wind up with small shrooms. They did sporulate, just were to god damn small to print. Would take 4-5 to make one normal small Cop. print. It is bad enough printing regular size COP.s.
Give it a try, if you want. But all the info I have seen, states go with the manure or straw.
Good luck.
