Releasing PC pressure
    #6170693 -

What are you guys opinions on releasing pressure manually right after a cook? I would prefer opinions from those that do it and/or have tried it.

my PC has a release dial on it if that helps?

I release the pressure on mine after a few minutes of the stove being off to help it cool quicker. I don't see how it could harm the PC or jars. I've got a 21 quart AA with the spring loaded weight replacement. i just flick the spring loaded dealy vertical and it releases about 5 p.s.i every 10-15 seconds. Make sure to have a nice thick oven mit or something to cover any exposed skin because the steam is VERY hot.

oh yeah the reason I want to do this is because I am using a small pressure cooker and I want to be able to pump out more jars faster.

Listen to mikeownow. Trying to cool your PC in the fridge or by running cold water on it might cause your jars to crack, and releasing the pressure manually will probably cause your water content to get thrown off. It only takes 15-30 minutes for the pressure to release on its own anyway. That's when you can take your jars out, but they will still be very hot so be careful.

Obvious, but don't innoc until they are cool to the touch. The spores/culture will die if you innoc too soon because the inside of the jars will be a bit warmer than the outside.

inoc 12-24 hours later 12 being at risk 24 being 100% safe.

If your PC has pressure, it means it is above 212F/100C and so are the jars. If you release the pressure, there is nowhere for the moisture in the jars to go but out. It ruins your mix. NEVER release pressure in a PC manually. Allow it to cool on it's own.

Jars are ready to inoculate when they cool. You can't rush mycology and be successful.

As mikeownow said and RR reiterated any moisture will boil out that will mean it will escape from your jars and throw off your moisture content which BTW makes no mycosense! It will also boilover any liquids such as syringes, agar or LC and make a mess. Bottom line use your mycosense if you have any and let it cool slowly. Heres a tip that I myself use, fill the sink with hot water place the PC in the hot water this water will cool and dissipate the heat quicker after fifteen minutes I will run a little cold water lowering the temp even faster this will cut time considerably but still don't rush this hobby where patience is a virtue! GL with that

in my experience, trying to release the pressure prematurely is just dangerous....ever had a steam burn?  freakin painful man!

With agar, I actually cover the PC with a tyvek covered insulating blanket to make it cool slower. Any rapid cooling of the PC will cause agar to boil over, making a horrible mess.
