NTLDR missing

Whats Up everyone,
Ntldr is missing. I have Windows on D:\, and for some reason recovery console is still recognizing windows on C:\. I have no C:\ partition.
So my question is were do I copy to?

IME you have a non-bootable disk in your A:\ drive. There is another silly-assed mistake that causes this rather frightening event but I'm not thinking too straight atm. Suffice to say that of the many many times I have received this message it was, indeed, a silly-assed mistake and not a missing NTLDR.

Drive letters and partitions are not the same thing, btw. Which partition is active (flagged bootable) plays a major role here.

Also, try "fdisk /mbr" (sans quotes)

If i think of that silly-assed mistake before i pass out i'll post it.

BTW, it really helps if you outline what you were doing before you got to this point.

Its not a floppy. My wife was using it today when she said it locked up, so she manualy rebooted. She then discovered a floppy in the drive so she removed it and rebooted again. This time ntldr is missing.

C:\ is the bootable drive according to recovery console. What attrib switch do I use to show the boot files on C:\?

Boot to the recovery console and type "chkdsk /r" without quotes. After it finishes, type "fixboot" without quotes. Then reboot.

the last thing to type in the recovery console if those 2 dont work is "fixmbr". one of those will work for you.

The MBR is fine, or he wouldn't have gotten the NTLDR error message.  :wink:

Actually I tried "fixmbr"... then when I restarted, as soon as the BIOS splash screen would exit, it would restart. After it did this a couple times I ended up reinstalling. I guess that doesnt really count as "getting it working" :smirk: Luckily I had a pretty decent backUp.

since you are still with a new os, give linux a try. check out the sabayon live dvd. if you like it, all you have to do is click the install icon on the desktop and you have a fully functioning gentoo system.

Yeah, I use Ubuntu 5.10 sometimes. I've only taken an intro class for it, so I'm not all that great with it yet. I do alot of music editing and encoding, so for now I'm stuck with Windows until I get better at Linux. Maybe you point me to a good linux site that explains installing sound cards and encoding music on Linux?

your sound card should definitely be recognized with sabayon linux, unless you have something like a MOTU card or similar. if you choose the KDE desktop environment, it will come ready with more than one cd ripping program. sabayon linux also comes with all the software you might want pre-installed.everything from DVD::RIP to Compiz support for the newest visual effects.
