Can anyone recommend some data recovery software?
    #5741071 -

I'm looking for some decent software (preferably FOSS but I don't mind cracking stuff) that can scan an HDD and recover files by filetype (e.g. doc and txt).

I know I could find some stuff on google, but recommendations can be really helpful.

Cheers

It's more matter of the filesystem than the format of the files. What are you looking for? Undeleting, data salvaging from damaged FSs?

My brother wants me to recover some documents from an HDD, it was fat32 when the documents were written to it but it's since been formatted with NTFS.

Does that sound possible / difficult?

I've recovered things with testdisk, but not to that extent. The file allocation table is probably completely fucked up. If so, it's a pretty hard job.

You may use this http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm it claims it works even with FAT broken.

And remember: work on an image of the partition rather than the partition, if possible. Good luck.

It does sound difficult. If he reformatted the drive and used it for a while you'll probably need professionals that can calculate the previous value of a sector based on its magnetic characteristic and those surrounding it. Not something you can do with commodity software but if you say there were terrorist plans on the drive maybe the government will do it for you.

If by terrorist plans you mean donkey pr0n...

anyways, I've abandoned the project, the data wasn't worth the time and energy trying to recover it would take.

Thanks anyway guys
