wow. sucks to be a windows user when the only solution is "an automated process to wipe hard drives and reinstall operating systems as a practical way to recover from malware infestation."

Or run an OS that wasn't based off a single user paradigm with no real thought or design put into security.

I've said this before, but I've run Windows exclusively on every computer I've ever owned and I dont have problems. It doesnt crash, i dont have to reboot, nothing. IMO, Windows is a perfectly fine OS for someone who isnt doing anything high-risk or high tech. I've used Apples OS before, and other ones too, and none of them are as intuitive or as easy to use as Windows.

What I have leared, being in the industry over the years, is that most Microsoft products work fine as long as you do not try and do anything "outside of the box". However, as soon as you try to do something that Microsoft doesn't want you to do, or didn't expect you to do, then the system falls apart.
Imagine somebody that builds a single room cottage to live in. A few years later, they add another couple of rooms. A few years later, they add a few more rooms, some more doors, and a skylight. A few years later, they add another story to the cottage, and a basement as well. The problem is, the person never looked at the house as a whole. Parts of the house were expanded without any thought given to the overall design. The house is great, but don't try to operate the oven and the shower at the same time. Oh, and the smoke alarm goes off when ever somebody opens the garage door.
This is basically how windows developed...without any thought put into where it was going or the impact the current designs would have on the future of the product. It is basically a pile of unorganized trash that gets the job done most of the time... just don't take a shower while you are cooking, so to speak.
The important part is that it works for you. It does, great. However, it doesn't work for me... but then, I use a computer the same way a race car driver uses a race car... not the same way most people use their computers (or cars).

*cough* There's a very, very good chance that this is just an excuse for microsoft to avoid having to tackle the issue of malware. That saves them money, and if microsoft is good at anything, it's cutting corners to save money.
By making their official stance into one that says "you fucked up, wipe your hard drive", they are shrugging off responsibility for the security of their OS. Rather than provide customer support, they merely place the blame AND responsibility onto the customer, which of course is very good for microsoft, and very bad for you. But they do not care if it's bad for you, because you've allready given them your money. Being responsible for their software does not make them any more money, so they find an excuse to avoid it whenever they can.
"How can we lower our overhead?" "Can we take money out of customer service?" "Sure, have PR whip up a cover story"

its also a VERY good incentive to upgrade to then next OS they put out... more money for MS wooopieee... if i ever own a cumputer i expect to use and keep vital information on you can bet your ass it ain't going to be connected to the internet! i'd have my older computer for surfing... that can get infected with whatever it wants just as long as i get my music/movies and porn! and i don't care if that computer is gonna be used for tech terrorisem or mass advertising just as long as i get my porn
this whole world will come crashing down soon enough and i intend to have my fun with it for the time being...
p.s fuck MS and fuck advertising people ("kill your selves...really...")

I've run windows before without having such problems as well, but still, it took alot of maintaince (anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, browser patches/security updates, registry cleaning, defragmenting, etc). Like I've said before, windows is a snap to install and easy to get going, but the price is many headaches down the road. I'd rather set up an OS that takes a bit of work at first, but then runs smoothly with little if any maintaince afterwards.
