Re: Am I missing something? Or is the big bang bullshit? [Re: Murex]

In a sense, black holes are just one giant nucleous of an atom with a very high density that keeps changing as it aquires more mass.

Yes! In many ways black holes behave like an atomic nucleus, and are even considered to be so for certain arguments.

There could also be a field near the event horizon that spirals matter around, making it travel at incredable speeds, and sending it off the path of the mallstrom, converting it into energy- light or radiation.

This is probably how the "jets" associated with quasars (the brightest and most distant objects in the observable universe) are formed: matter which is accelerated in the accretion disc to near light-speed "misses" the black hole and is shot out into space in jets perpendicular to the axis of the accretion disk (and along the black hole's north/south pole axis).

i can never understand how we can base new theories on conjecture... i do believe black holes exist- but i don't fully trust that belief. I've seen pictures, information about them and read about certain theories regarding them..

sure, humans have very nice telescopes and can try to pinpoint all kinds of cosmic signals, but who is to say that there isn't some huge, invisible teletubby using his psychic powers to eat up surrounding areas? For all the talk of being able to come up with novel concepts about the universe, we keep thinking about it like a cosmic mystery arena, where we're giddy little children looking through a giant pane of greasy glass... we base everything on what we can make out through the dirty window, because there simply isn't anything else... sometimes we hear something through the glass- still nothing important..

I suppose it's just a personal thing.. In our immediate lives, we try to base inner theories about the world according to what metaphysics lets us.. ( wrong word, can't think of the right one.... closely related though ) Personally, I take it in like a recording, which I think it is.. I approach things cautiously, and don't get attached unless I really want to ( I don't have to have a reason ). Oh well.. hardly anyone agrees with me in person anyway

Well black holes aren't really based on conjecture...they were realized as a result of general relativity. I think it was Schwarzschild who did the original calculations to show that Einstein's theory predicted the existence of black holes.

The ones that have been observed (indirectly, of course - x-ray emission and hawking radiation) have coincided exactly with how the theory tells us they should appear.

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

The big bang of the universe created the laws of physics.

in one of the "miscellaneous" chapters in TIHKAL (i think) dr shulgin lays out his reasons for thinking that psysicists are talking outa their asses when doing cosmology...
red shift due to "tired light" & the universe always was, always will be...

me, i like the "cosmic egg" model pictured in itzak bentov's wonderful little book _stalking the wild pendulum_
(of course, then you have to account for the initial cosmic zap, hehheh...)

Ever read The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov? It addresses that "initial cosmic zap", though not in a way that answers anything seriously.

An interesting book, to say the least, but don't read it if you are looking for a text on the origins of the universe.
