hpoo works ok without a casing layer, you can simply let it fruit as is.
forget that wax paper thing.

You'll always get better performance with a proper casing layer, but cubes on manure will still flush well without a casing layer.

What do you mean you can't open it every few days to change the wax paper? Fruiting chambers are not for protection from contaminants, but to hold humidity in.

a monotub "by the book" doesn't need to be opened and im pretty sure the original teks discouraged doing so...

but that being said you can certainly open it once the substrate is fully colonized... gotta open it to apply your casing layer anyway right? :wink:  its the same thinking that "a fully colonized cake is resistant to contamination"... think of the big block of substrate at the bottom of the tub as a giant cake, same is true really.

it will be best to keep it closed and in the dark for those few days after you've applied the casing layer, but then once the mycelium starts coming through it will probably do you good to open it often and provide extra FAE, and mist as needed to keep your moisture levels within the casing layer up :thumbup:

monotubs are designed to be maintanence free and that's cool too if that's what you're going for.  but baby it and it will return on your time investment :wink:

The tub isn't to protect against contaminants because they can easily get in around the gaps in the lid, unless that is also taped up. The polyfill seems to slow down air exchange enough to allow humidity to build while still allowing some gas exchange. I'd suggest opening and fanning often after full colonization.

I have a monotub in the works right now w/o a casing layer. I was reading about this too and thought I would give it a try. The nice thing about not using a casing layer is that it saves you a week of colonizing time. But I am sure that I won't get as good of results as with a casing layer. Instead I am hoping that the difference will be small.

Wronguy stated that you need to dunk your casing in between each flush just like a cake. Considering this is pretty much like a fruit a giant cake this sounds right.

Off of my tubs I have gotten between 2-4 ounces on the first flush. The 2 ounce tub was my first and definitely my worst tub ever. This was casued from checking on it too often and setting it off into fruiting mode before the casing layer fully colonized.

I will be sure to post me results somewhere here on the shroomery.
